Great Ryokan ,dinner and breakfast were exceptional

“Warm staff, excellent service and great location.”

The staff were very warm and helpful. After checking-in, we were given a map to explore the town with many unique shops nearly. Upon our return, we found our room well prepared with our luggage inside. We were impressed with our Japanese dinner from the start to finish, carefully served by our young waitress in a private room. The same goes for the delicious Japanese breakfast the next morning. The location of the hotel was perfect to explore the town. We were very happy with our stay.

“Avoid”

Sadly, this ryokan has become a tourist trap, catered to foreigners. Definitely not an authentic experience. One of the staff was extremely ill, shouldn't have been at work. He started coughing all over us whilst showing us the room. I'm not blaming him, I'm blaming the management for not sending him back home on sick leave. Sadly Japan isn't great at that either. The meal wasn't impressive either and service was terrible. I've rarely been this dissappointed in Japan.

Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Greetings and smiles everyday. Walkable to lake kirin and shopping streets. Rooms were great, just abit noisy as our room is near two public bath. Breakfast was ok, not the fancy type. Overall stay was great

Lovely traditional Japanese accommodation with amazing facilities

Great food, accommodation was very spacious with 2 private baths en-suite, one indoor and one outdoor. There are also other onsen baths within the property you could use for your family - on a first come first served basis. Location was great for exploring Yufuin with all major sights within a 10-15 min walking distance. Staff was attentive and helpful. Meal portions are just right, and the ryokan also provides hard boiled eggs and sweet potatoes for guests. Guests could also participate in popcorn and roasted mochi making after dinner.

“Onzen heaven in Yufuin”

Wonderful place to stay in a quiet but great location for all the Yufuin attractions. Food was absolutely exceptional, beautifully presented and superb quality. We absolutely loved the outdoor onzen. The accommodation was really spacious and even contained an indoor and outdoor bath. Could not more highly recommend this place. Exceptional value for money. We didn't want to leave!

“A gorgeous Japan experience”

Loved the whole feel of Yufin Hoteiya. The main building where the reception is was so beautiful to walk into. You could appreciate a sense of 'old' Japan. Our building again was such a delight to be in, with it's corridor to the bathroom area, the sliding doors to the courtyard; just lovely. The food was delicious with many small and different things to try, both for dinner and for breakfast; being served in your own private dining room. The staff were lovely. Also a great location; just a short walk away from the hustle of the main tourist street.

The food provided is delicious (the portions are quite sizeable). The accommodation and service was also top class. Very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Close enough to most things in Yufuin in terms of walking; there is a shuttle to and from the train station.

This was an amazing experience. A beautiful ryokan with an exceptional staff, a great dinner and breakfast, and an outworldy atmosfere. The location is great. You are a bit further away from a main road to have a feeling of escaping from the harsh every-day reality, but close enough to have a causual lazy stroll around Kirin Lake or the fable like streets of Yufuin. The staff and servises were superb. You know from the first moment when you enter the ryokan that these people would like to do everything they can for you to enjoy your stay. The atmosphere in the ryokan was amazing. The traditional architecture, traditional fireplaces, common spaces, the outdoor part of the resort, the onsens, and the view of the mt. Yufu definitely helps to forget you live in the 21st century and need to go to work this monday.

Private outdoor onsen was great, and the kaiseki breakfast and dinner were scrumptious! Good location near the Main Street too.

Kind staff, very attentive. Took special care for everyone's food preference and offered different options. the campfire at night was great!!

The room with the private onsen is lovely. It was just what we need for a one night stay at Yufuin. The shuttle bus service was convenient. The meals served was lovely, especially with dinner. The beef served was in generous portion and super tender. The rest of the meal was very delicious as well. Staff was very helpful and friendly as well.

The staff are amazing! The hotel is a small paradise and the village is idyllic.

“Overpriced for what felt like a budget ryokan”

Our stay at Hoteiya was average at best. We had paid a premium for the rooms with the private onsens but it felt like we were being penalized for the upgrade instead. The rooms are near the front of the property which meant that they were noisier. The private onsen was next to the common foot path which did not give you any sense of privacy. The bedroom window was also next to another footpath with a light perpetually turned on all night, there was no curtain in the room which meant that it was hard to sleep at night with the light shining in. The meals were also a disappointment. Small quantity and not good quality. Food was served cold like it’s been sitting out for ages. For the price we paid c. USD500 a night, I’m sure you can find better quality ryokans who treat you better.

Great experience for outdoor onsen, the half board was excellent. Quality food and totally very happy with our meals. Highly recommended.

“Love it, quaint and quiet stay!”

Quiet, away from the bustle but close enough within 5 mins walking distance to the Lake Kinrin and Yufuin village. Although the kaiseki meal is simpler than some of the ryokans but it is good cos there’s no wastage of stuff that we wldnt eat and the food is delicious! The milk, onsen egg and sweet potatoes are bonuses!
