Incredible

We absolutely loved our stay. The ryokan was beautiful, traditional but very modern, clean, food was divine and staff were great. The food served was an art and super delicious, served in a private dining room. We were looked after by Matsu throughout our stay and she was incredible - thank you Matsu for making our stay so fantastic! Our room was spacious, very clean, and nothing was trouble. We were provided with the yukata robes, geta sandals, baskets and towels and wooden key for our 9 bath experience. The whole town was magical, walking around cobblestone streets hearing the clicking of the getas was just so cool. We also loved the private bath at the hotel which included hot spring bath, sauna, cold bath, relaxation area and other amenities. Considering the food and services we think it was also an exceptional value. We would have easily paid the same amount as the room rate just for the dinner in the cities! Thank you Sakaeya and Matsu!

A special shout out to Hinate who was absolutely amazing, very friendly and made us feel very welcome at the private meal ceremonies, so thank you Hinate for showing us everything great about Shinshu. Great place to unwind! A wonderful onsen experience.

The property has its own onsen. The outdoor onsen is the best, beautiful with bamboo trees. For private onsen an extra charge is applicable. Food was excellent. Service was always bubbly and full of smiles. Great place to relax.

Not just a hotel stay but an exceptional experience worth doing!

We were picked up from the station and taken to the Sakaeya. There was a person dedicated to our stay that explained our room, the garments that we could wear while staying there and for exploring the public onsens in the town. He showed to a private dining room where he served a beautifully presented 8 course traditional dinner and the next morning served us breakfast. There was a wonderful array of toiletries and samples in the bathroom. The shuttle bus took us up to the snow monkey park early and met us at the designated time with our bags and dropped us at the station.

Unique experience! Recommend!

Great location in a pretty street with several onsen just minutes away, at night putting on Yakuta and geta (traditional thong shoes) using special master key was a unique experience. We were in a family room with bath& shower. All staff were so lovely, esp with our very very limited Japanese. The hotel provided a shuttle to snow monkey park (500 yen PP) which was convenient - go at 9am as gets busier during the morning; also free shuttle to train station. Recommend dining in at least one night and breakfast, it’s traditional but a very special unique experience and very good value for all the beautifully presented food received!

Amazing!! Must visit, stay more than 1 night.

Beautiful location! The food was great, staff very friendly and accommodating, we don't speak much Japanese but staff all communicated in english as much as they could. The streets were so pretty and clean! We only stayed one night, we have decided we have to come back and spend more time here next time.

Lovely relaxing atmosphere, luxurious and comfortable

Sakaeya is a fabulous hotel and far exceeded my expectations! It's a lovely mix of traditional culture with Western comforts. We had their dinner and breakfast and the food was delightfully presented and delicious - the vegetarian meal was very special.

Fantastic property. Highly recommended for a traditional ryokan stay

The traditional rooms and the onsen were wonderful. The staff were exceptional and very helpful. They made such an effort with language translation. Check in/out was easy. The property also communicated well via booking.com. The complimentary lounges with tea coffee and other drinks were useful. Great location for the snow monkeys.
