Don't be put off by some reviews, this place is fine. Some things are a little unusual, but it has charm. The onsens are actually good, I guess you could say the womens outdoor onsen is bath sized, but still nice. It's in a great spot. Sure you can get luxury if you pay more, but for the price, this one is ok.

“never again.”
this property is NOT suitable for families. the building itself is freezing, rooms were so cold we had to have the kerosene heater on 24/7 which meant waking every 3 hours to turn back on. kitchen facilities are a joke. two cups, a bowl and a spoon for the entire hostel. we woke at night to drunk guests and there ar eno drying facilities to dry your ski gear. staff were ok, but really not much help. the town itself is run down and nice to visit but no restaurants for overnight guests. you’d be far better off staying in yamamouchi town where there are more amenities. we needed up leaving a day early and moving on to a warmer place. don’t book here!

“Overall, a comfortable stay for the price.”
Location is absolutely perfect and the onsen was wonderful. I usually had the female onsen to myself and my husband said the same for the male side. Room was large and it felt welcoming. Coin laundry available, which was appreciated.

It was very close to the snow monkeys. We travelled in winter so the room was very cold, but in other months it may be better.

“Fine Japanese character”
Basic but Cheap! It's old school Japan but I found that just adds authentic character. Host was lovely. The place has everything you need. And yes they charge a small fee for a towel - that's how budget accommodation stays cheap people!

Nice place to stay in Yamanouchi, good location with some restaurants and bars near by. Also good if you are planning on visiting the monkey snow park. The stay was very nice, traditional japanese room. Onsen included in hotel, also very good.

“Pleasant stay at hostel with very hot private onsen”
While the hotel is dated, the stay was above my expectations of the budget price. You have onsen in the hotel but it can be extra hot. Very convenient location of you want to go see monkeys next day.

“Shibu Onsen”
Location was great, in proximity to the snow monkeys and the bus stop to shiga kogen. Very large bedroom with toilet. Enjoyed the onsen in the hostel, there is an inside one and an outside one each for men and women. Washing machine available which was really handy. More bedding provided if needed.

“Great location but extra fees are to be paid”
Onsen directly in the hostel. Great location next to bus stop, you can even walk to monkey park (1h). Cutest location to stay at, great restaurants around and mini market. Nice cafe for breakfast 3 min walk away.

Room was spacious and had a private toilet. Shared kitchen, laundry, Wifi and showers/onsen were great, and we were able to leave our luggage before check in and after check out. We also loved the kotatsu - a must have in the winter! Great value for money. Location great for bus routes to Shiga Kogen, Snow Monkeys and Yudanaka Station. There was a small superette a few doors down, and a few small family restaurants nearby too.

“Nice simple hotel”
Great location, nice staff. The rooms were nice but could have been cleaner (according to Japanese standards) We can see it's a hotel with a lot of potential, the bath were great also ! I don't know why this hotel has such bad rating. Let's say that I would recommend for people who travel cheap and are not fancy ! Keep in mind that it's a traditional hotel there's no AC, nor heating so the room will be cold if you come during winter ! But you'll have a kotatsu (table with covers and a heater) to keep you warm. There's toilets in the room so very convenient.

“A pleasant stay Nozaru”
Honestly- I don’t know why this place gets such bad reviews! I stayed here one night and I had a very pleasant stay! I liked my room a lot, it was comfortable spacious and clean and I thought that the owners were very pleasant as well! The room I stayed in was with a shared bathroom. I though the bathroom was clean and I also stashed some food in the refrigerator and that was very clean as well! Of course the building is quite old so overall the place could use a little TLC. But it’s in a great location! The town is cute and quiet, with several onsens, temples and cute shops. But I do agree with every one else akin regards to the extra charges- especially the parking.
