Overview
Located 1700 metres above sea level, Hotel Japan Shiga is situated within Shiga Kogen in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, 100 metres from Shiga Kogen Ski Resort’s Ichinose Family Ski Area where guests can enjoy skiing in winter and trekking in summer. Featuring a public bath, the property boasts an ethnic restaurant and yakiniku restaurant. Discounted ski gear rentals and free WiFi are offered. Japan Shiga Hotel offers Western rooms with beds, as well as Japanese-style rooms with a tatami (woven-straw) floor and traditional futon bedding. All rooms come with a TV, yukata robes and an en suite toilet, while bathing facilities are shared. Guests can unwind in the public mineral bath, which is separate per gender. Other facilities include a souvenir shop and drinks vending machines. Free parking is provided. Yakiniku Restaurant Otenma serves Japanese-style yakiniku barbecue dishes cooked in a smokeless infrared grill built into the dining table. Dishes consist of local speciality Shinshu beef, which are prepared from high-grade cows raised with apples as part of their diet. Dishes can be enjoyed with soy based barbecue sauce, and consist of various parts of beef. In addition, there is a restaurant Altopiano directly connected to the slopes. Gourmet burgers made from 100% beef and authentic Neapolitan pizza are available. In the evening, this sports bar and dining room offers billiards and darts while enjoying music. On the large wooden deck, draft beer is served to quench your thirst after a day of skiing or snowboarding. Hotel Japan Shiga is located just steps away from a bus stop bound for Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. It is a 35-minute drive or bus ride from Yudanaka Train Station, which is a 45-minute train ride from JR Nagano Station. There is a direct bus available from Nagano Station to the Shiga Kogen area. There are a convenience store and restaurants in the surrounding area, open during the winter seasons.

Close to the lifts and located in Ichinose where there are a few restaurants to choose from.

Excellent, friendly staff with pretty good English. Nice dry room for equipment, almost ski in ski out. Best choice of restaurants in the area. Loved the main onsen bath.

“Super convenient and friendly hotel”
The hotel is so conveniently located, less than a minutes walk to the end of the road and you are skiing down to the Ichinose Family / Ichinose Diamond ski areas. The grand bath was a relaxing way to end the day. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Parking was available for our hire car right out front and there was secure ski lockers as well as a super warm drying room for boots. Beautiful view outside the window of the slopes and snow covered forest. Able to watch the groomers working each morning. The hotel provides a buffet which was helpful as the food options in Shiga are very limited at dinner time.

“Very old, no housekeeping even if you stay for a week”
The hotel has seen better days, there is old charm and there is neglect. Peeling wallpaper, faded, ripped posters on walls. It needs at least some cosmetic improvements. The place has the feeling of a school camp and lo and behold, a high school did have their ski camp at some stage. The room doesn’t even have a mini fridge. The only thing it has going for it is a very convenient ski in/ski out location. Has several nice eateries on site, a casual Korean, a pizza place and a skiyaki/yakiniku restaurant.

“A Great Ski In/Out Hotel, and Generally Convenient for Muslims”
As Muslims, the primary priorities were to able to perform prayers and halal food. Because the location is fantastic - ski-in/out to the Ichinose Family Area - it was super convenient to come back to the room for Zuhr/Asr and head back out to the slopes. The buffet breakfast and dinner had ingredient lists next to the dishes, so it was easy to avoid the non-halal meats and pick the seafood/vegetarian dishes. We had enough variety for most of the meals. Ski-related stuff: - there's a rental shop in the hotel itself, with special prices for hotel guests - ski / boots locker area to keep your rented equipment for the night - small pigeon-hole lockers to keep your valuables when out (you can leave your room key with the front desk, though) - large unsecured baggage room to keep your luggage if you arrive early but are in a hurry to get on the slopes - we emailed the front desk who gave us contacts to the nearby ski schools to book instructors The Japanese-style room was large enough for our family of 5; with enough places to dry / air our ski clothes. The ambience is nice, with lots of wood finishing everywhere.

About 100 steps from the slopes, great onsen, beds were comfortable, ping pong table was fun, breakfast was great, close to restaurants, buffet dinner was pretty good, friendly staff and great place to store board and boots.
