Aboriginal Culture in the Otways

The Gadubanud are known to be the Aboriginal people of the Otway region. The name Gadubanud (sometimes pronounced ‘Katubanuut’) means ‘People of the King Parrot’.

For many thousands of years before English colonisation the Gadubanud people maintained their cultural identity and connection to the Otway Ranges. Since colonisation massacre and decline has effected the Gadubanud people. With the help of the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation representing the traditional owners of South-Western Victoria it is hoped that the culture of the Gadubanud people can be preserved for all in future.
