Great garden, very well maintened. Airco was working very well, bathroom and room were extremely clean, my food preferences were taken into account for breakfast.

I don’t even know where to begin, we had an incredible stay with the family here!!! The host was soooo nice and welcoming, made sure we had everything and went out of his way to organize trips. We booked the safari over the host as well with his brother which was really nice. He knew a lot about the animals and made an effort to spot also our favourite animals. I can only recommend for you to come here to experience true Sri Lankan warmth. And the dinner omg!!!! Best we’ve had so far 🥰

These are 3 lovely spacious little houses, away from the busy mainstreet by a little jungle road, tugged away in a nice garden setting. All you need is there and the owner can/will arrange the rest :-) If you are wondering how the system works here in Udawalawe- how can all this guesthouses be so cheap? The profit is through their safari’s and extra’s. So yes: just book it at the place you are at & stick to it. :-) And while you are there: have that super delicious home cooked rice & curry for dinner - one of the best I had so far! The safari Clay House offers is never a group thing but they choose to always offer it just for you/your group. They take time and the guide will know about the animals and point then other/ tell you. I had a lovely, tranquil experience with a lot of elephants super close to the Jeep.

This place is amazing..!! Subash made us feel very welcome and he really cares that you have a great experience. He arranged an excellent safari for us, we learnt a lot & saw lots of different animals. We had a gorgeous home cooked evening meal and breakfast. We had a twin double bed room which wa a really spacious and luxurious and a lovely outside seating area. Would highly recommend.

We stayed at The Clay House for 3 days and 2 nights, hosted by the wonderful Subhash, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. From the moment we arrived, Subhash and his family made us feel incredibly welcome. Their only goal was to make sure we were happy and we truly were, 100%. The warmth and kindness they showed us made the stay feel less like accommodation and more like being welcomed into a home. We ate dinner there on both evenings and the food was absolutely delicious, authentic, home-cooked, and made with so much care. Every meal was a treat. Subhash was also our safari guide, and with well over a decade of experience, we couldn’t have asked for anyone better. Thanks to his deep knowledge and sharp eye, we had an incredible safari day and saw elephants (including baby elephants), crocodiles, buffalo, peacocks, and a wide variety of tropical birds. His understanding of wildlife and passion for nature really brought the whole experience to life. After the safari, Subhash took us to an elephant sanctuary that focuses on rehabilitating and rewilding elephants that were orphaned or required medical treatment. It was an eye-opening and genuinely moving experience. Overall, this was a perfect stay. Amazing people, incredible food, unforgettable wildlife experiences, and a truly special atmosphere. We would recommend The Clay House to absolutely everyone and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

We had the most wonderful time at Clay house; Subhash and his family are lovely people who went above and beyond to make our stay as nice as possible. The food was absolutely delicious and it was amazing to try traditional Sri Lankan food. Subash also provides tours to Udawalawe; he and his brother are very knowledgeable and could answer all of our questions. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed. It is a beautiful location in nature and we cannot recommend Clay House enough.

Best food in whole Sri Lanka provided by a kind family. Also, the safari with the host is an unforgettable experience. Most go in Udawalawe.

The Clay House was a lovely place to stay while we went on a safari trip. The staff were welcoming and attentive, and helped our driver with directions. The rooms were beautifully presented with hot water and AC. We enjoyed the beautiful surrounding gardens and plants. We also were treated to a delicious feast for breakfast, and paid extra for an incredible dinner.

This place is run with real care and integrity by Subhash, a long-time safari guide who recently reopened the property. It shows in the way everything is handled: very clean, calm, well-maintained, and genuinely welcoming. In an area where many places push aggressive safari upsells or feel transactional, this stay felt refreshingly honest. Subhash never pushed anything and was simply kind, transparent, and helpful when needed. The food was excellent – simple, fresh, and clearly cooked with attention. I ate here several times and enjoyed every meal. The rooms and common areas are clean, quiet, and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere is peaceful. I also did a safari through Subhash and felt completely safe and respected – both as a guest and in how the animals and park rules were treated. It was clear that he truly cares about doing things the right way.

Subhash, the owner of the accomodation, was the best host! He did everything to make me feel welcome and at peace, is incredibly friendly and super hospitable and helpful. When I mentioned I didn’t do a cooking class yet, he arranged for his mother and wife to come and teach me Sri Lankan food. Subhash made this stay unforgettable.

Simple nice, clean local accommodation in forest. Friendly and very helpful staff. I recommend to take dinner and safari tour from Clay House.

A really nice apartment to stay in when you want to explore the national park. Especially welcoming was the warm-hearted hotel manager, who helped us with everything we needed. He organized a safari, drove us everywhere nearby and even came up with a trip idea for us when we were a bit lost. Also the lunches/dinners were nice. The garden area feels super safe and you have some space to watch birds, squirrels and monkeys in the trees.

Mr. Pushpa made us feel right at home. He helped us with organising a wonderful (last-minute) safari and we are still talking about what a feast the breakfast and dinner were that he prepared for us. If you are visiting the area I can recommend staying the clay house.

“Peaceful place with excellent service”

This place was amazing! The accomodation is peaceful and clean with a beautiful garden. We too many photos of birds, mammals and a snake there! The staff made the best dinner we had during our 1 month Sri Lanka trip. He also packed a nice lunch package for our safari.

Fantastic stay!! Pushpa, the manager, was incredibly thoughtful, making our stay superb. From ensuring the room was nicely chilled upon our arrival to preparing an early morning coffee before our safari – his attention to detail was exceptional. Pushpa allowed us to take a shower past the check-out time and even ensured we had a bite after our safari when there was no time to eat in the morning. The deluxe family room, the newest addition to the resort, was spacious and immaculate. The bathroom was clean with hot water, and the complimentary teas and coffees were a nice touch. Our dinner upon arrival was not only tasty but also generously portioned, surpassing the quality of many restaurants. The resort can organize a safari, but there's no pressure to book through them. Oh, the WiFi was excellent as well!! A big THANK YOU to Pushpa and the team for an outstanding experience!

“The best stay we have ever had anywhere in the world”

Everything about this property is exceptional. The staff at this property are the best staff you will ever come across at any hotel in the world. I left for safari came back to a washed rental car. I mentioned a guest had a birthday and they went out and bought a birthday cake and candles for them out of there own generosity and sang with us. The rooms are amazing and well thought out. Squeegee for showers fresh towels comfy beds good air conditioning. Pushpa was one of the staff here that you will meet and the guy is a legend and will do anything for you. We would stay here every single time we come and they organise the safari for you which was amazing as we have done the same before with other company’s and this was the best. Please consider staying here and meeting pushpa and his beautiful family. Also the dinner is amazing.
