A lovely ryokan situated in Tako town, just a 22-minute bus ride from Narita Airport Terminal 2. To get there, head to Level 1F at Terminal 2 and look for bus stop no. 13. The bus is easily recognizable as it's usually decorated with advertisements about Tako town. The bus schedule matches Google Maps perfectly, and you can pay using an IC card, which costs 300 yen per ride. The bus stops at the Tako Town Hall, which is about a 10-minute walk to the ryokan. Since I enjoy walking, I didn't mind the stroll at all—in fact, I loved it! Upon arrival, I was greeted by Mieko-san, a kind lady who patiently gave me local tips around town using a translator app. When I asked to use their toaster oven, she happily obliged and even went out of her way to make me a sunny-side-up egg and some delicious soup. I also met her lovely aunt, Michiko-san. Both of them are such delightful and witty hosts. The house itself is cozy and traditional. When you walk inside, you can hear the classic wooden creaks with every step. I recalled learning at a Tokyo museum that these creaks actually served as an ancient "security system" so people would know when someone was walking by! Hahaha. Apparently, Tako town is famous for its rice—known to be of such high quality that it was historically served to royalty. I had to try it, so I bought some cooked rice from Seimiya, a supermarket about a 15-minute walk from the ryokan. I truly loved the walk there because it takes you through beautiful paddy fields, which were vibrant, young, and green during my visit in June. The Tako rice lived up to the hype—it was slightly sticky and chewy, just the way I like it. For shopping, I went to a drugstore called Create, located around 7 minutes away on foot. Surprisingly, items like chocolates and eye drops were cheaper here compared to Aeon Narita, though keep in mind you can claim tax-free at Aeon.

A wonderful place with wonderful hosts. Highly recommended. We'll be back again.

A wonderful place with wonderful hosts. There are so many beautiful sights and supermarkets nearby. I highly recommend stopping here before your flight from Narita. You can finish shopping for souvenirs and other things. There are excellent supermarkets and pharmacies without the tourist crowds. And the atmosphere of a Japanese village is simply touching. A quiet, cozy place.

A country stay to freshen up your holiday.

The property owners spoke little english however we were able to make out what they were saying and with longer sentences the host used google translate. The hosts were super friendly and we loved the traditional style. The beds were traditional shikibuton. We were recommended to hire bikes and eat at a local restaurant which we did and we enjoyed. The country offered cooler, fresher air. I would totally stay again.

This ryokan is an authentic, Japanese cultural experience. No fuss, caring hosts make you welcome beyond requirements and yet you have privacy within the old, magnificent building by the rice fields. Conveniently located 10 walk from the bus stop. 20 mins from Narita airport. Tako Town is a country town - great for walking or cycling and with magnificent temples. Excellent local restaurant. Hydrangeas line the river, which must be magnificent when in bloom I'll be back.

Earm amazing hospitality. Comfortable, clean, quiet.

I enjoyed the warm, amazing hospitality, from owners/staff: Mieko and Michiko. I was looking for a supermarket and Mieko offered to give me a lift. In the morning I enjoyed coffee, a japanese snack/sweet. Mieko gave a beautiful gift as souvenir from Japan. The room was big, the tatami comfortable, clean bathroom, beautiful house and very quiet for a great night of sleep.

Excellent experience.

The Owners are very kind and show you around the building immediately. You get a Map of Tako-town and you will be greeted very warmly. On my third day the owner told me to come with her and she showed me Tako's beautiful temples/shrines. She always asked if everything was okay and if I needed something i should tell her. She has a warm smile and it was really hard for me to check out. I will definitely return.

Great experience staying in a traditional Japanese home. Far from the city but if you would like the quiet and calm atmosphere, it's a good place. The owner had given me a warm welcome. I was given a token as I left and was able to wear the traditional dress for photo memories. I was dropped off by the beautiful grandma to the bus waiting area near their place because I had a huge luggage. The bus is every hour so you have to know the time schedule.

Look at the section about what we liked! :)

We loved how welcoming the staff were to us, especially the hostess Mieko and Kai who helped translate for us. They were very enthusiastic for us to participate in traditional activities such as making onigiri and crafting of talismans that they gifted us; they also demonstrated kindness and thoughtfulness that let us feel less like guests and more like family. We loved how authentically traditional the ryokan was and the town of Tako itself is traveller friendly with lots of temples and natural landscapes to explore. It was an excellent end to our Japan wide trip, away from the busy and loud city life; we’ll definitely be returning and will recommend it to our friends. Even after weeks after our return home, we still think fondly of our time at the Masugataya Ryokan, thank you all for your generosity and hospitality!

As our last stop in our Japan stay, Masugataya Ryokan was beyond perfect. We are very grateful.

The hosts are very attentive, kind and helpful. Our room was beautiful and perfect for our stay. There is nothing we would change from our stay and we will be staying with them again as soon as we get the chance.

I only stayed one night and got a bit unlucky with the weather but because of that I was able to experience some exceptional local kindness. The hotel is in the middle of Tako, with access to a few eateries and sightseeing spots, all within walking distance. It's a small town but well worth exploring. You will be greeted by the owner who has prepared English brochures and maps for the area. Though they themselves do not speak much English, the forms and informations are all in English and you will definitely be able to communicate. (because I speak Japanese fluently I was however quite fortunate to not have to resort to hands and feet for talking, so please keep this in mind for this review.) The communal facilities are clean, lockable and easily accessible. The room was plenty spacious, though please be advised that if you bring heavy luggage and are situated on the second floor you will need to carry your luggage quite a ways, from the main building and up the stairs, this was not the case for me but for another customer who checked in after me. I was on the ground floor, particularly enjoyed the screen sliding doors and the tatami flooring. The futon was already laid out when I came and was quite comfortable to sleep on. Aside from that I was overwhelmingly surprised by the owner's kindness and passion for kimono. I was fortunate enough to try on quite a few and experience something very unique. I learned a great many things about the history of the garments to their use and appeal. Thanks to the loving couple hosting the inn I was able to enjoy my day despite the approaching typhoon and arrived at the airport safe and dry. It's just a bit out of the way, close to the airport but not at all noisy so I recommend staying here for anyone interested in really learning about Japanese culture. The owners are very passionate about what they do and they care greatly about their town, and the customers wellbeing, you will not be disappointed.

Incredible hosts

The hosts were some of the most kind and welcoming people I have ever met, and went to much effort to make sure I was comfortable, and even offered me gifts and to drive me to the bus stop. I cannot recommend them enough.
