“Well located friendly Japanese style hostel”

Our host Taka and his staff are so kind and nice. Looked after us very well, greet and sent me off with big smiles , bows and hand waves. I will not forget. The location is excellent just across the road from the train/bus station. Bed is comfy and the place is immaculate. Taketa is such a calm, cute town and lovely to explore and I agree with the other reviews it’s really a charming place tucked away in the mountains. Breakfast was beautifully presented and delicious.

“Cycling the hills”

Staff were so friendly and genuine. The caffe attached to the hostel was also really good. Atmosphere was lovely .

Taketa is one of the cutest places i’ve been to, lots of restaurants, hiking options, kind people and tranquility. The hostel is really nice with a little bakery and bar downstairs.

Taketa Ekimae Hostel was amazing, such a great place to stay. My family including teenage kids loved it. We stayed in the mixed dorm as a family. The hosts also organised a new years day dinner which we attended and the food was amazing!! It was so nice also to be welcomed as though we were family, including having the host stand on the street waving goodbye to us until we could no longer see him in our rear view mirror. This will be a highlight from our trip to Japan.

“Awesome hostel with great facilities and perfectly located.”

Awesome hostel with both private and shared rooms. The bunks beds were large, private and very comfortable. Excellent communal areas that were warm and welcoming. Downstairs also operated as a cafe/bakery. Great value breakfast. Perfectly located

I can't recommend this place enough... Wish we had more time to stay for longer. Its a great base to explore the area and enjoy the cute town of Taketa

“Wonderful staff”

The staff was adorable! They gave us so many great tips about what to do and where to eat. The hostel is very clean and full of charm. We absolutely loved our stay there!

Everything was perfect! The host Taka San is absolutely lovely and extremely helpful, he helped me organize my day trip to Mount Aso and it went perfectly, he’s got great recommandations for restaurants in the city. He really made my stay wonderful! The hostel itself is a beautiful, tradional building, very well kept and clean. The breakfast was delicious and Taketa is really worth visiting. I’ll come back for sure! Thanks again for everything

“Relaxing and charming”

Don’t miss out on this place! A wonderful place in a beautiful town with great restaurants that the staff can recommend to you. Be sure to visit the sushi and tempura restaurant! There are many excursions and day trips available to do, however if you don’t have a car it’s a good idea to speak to the staff or tourist center (100m away) for information about the buses since they might not leave/come back very often. I came here at random and stayed for 6 nights with no plan and no car, it was my best week in Japan! The staff are truly incredible, thank you everyone <3

The property is exceptional! Beautiful traditional guesthouse, very helpful staff, and a gorgeous town! We loved it so much, it was my favourite stay in the whole of Japan!

“Great Stay”

Great location next to the train station and close to local onsen. You can receive discounted price at reception if you are interested. Breakfast was simple but fresh and very tasty. Hostel is very pretty, traditional, wooden house and has great atmosphere. 2 common spaces could be used for relaxing. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Castle ruins are close, around 20-30 minutes by walk, highly recommended to visit. There is also tourist Kyushu OLLE: Okubungo trail between train stations Bungo Taketa and Asaji. We didn't have time to visit, but looked interesting.

“Wish I could have stayed longer!”

The amazing facilities, fantastic location and exceptional hosts at Taketa Ekimae make this the best hostel I have ever stayed at! After asking for information on hikes nearby, I was given extensive detail about little-known trails and swimming spots with several maps! The dorm rooms are super comfortable and the breakfast is great too. Highly recommend as a base for hiking Aso/Kuju Ranges and exploring the surrounding national parks.

“Very nice hostel, great team and right in the city center”

Very nice accommodation in a lovely town. Came here by bicycle and could leave it in the café over night. The team is great, very helpful and quick in replying. The bed was comfy and I had a good night sleep.

Brilliant host, excellent breakfast, great stay!

This is a taste of old Japan. 100+ year old hostel run by the loveliest people I've met in Japan so far. I hope to come back here again.
