Overview
Awarded in 2014 with TripAdivsor’s Certificate of Excellence, Takayama Ouan features traditional Japanese designs and tatami (woven-straw) flooring throughout. It boasts a rooftop open-air natural hot-spring bath, cosy family baths and a hearty homemade breakfast buffet. Free WiFi is available throughout the property. JR Takayama Station is located a 3-minute walk away. Rooms at Ouan Takayama feature tatami-mat flooring and Western beds. They have satellite TV, a refrigerator and a tea maker. En suite bathrooms come with a shower and free toiletries. Guests at Ouan can unwind at the large public bath or use one of the family baths with mountain views (subject to availability). The public bathing area also include a sauna. Rejuvenating massages are available at the on-site beauty salon. The onsen was amazing with the sauna and the cold plunge really enjoyed it, nice facilities, and never too busy as most people always just que up for the private one, - the public one was sooo much better. Mattress was a bit on the firmer side but not too bad. Just note it’s right behind the train station can get a tiny bit noisy sometimes. I usually struggle sleeping with noise and it was okay for me. Staff was super polite and helpful.

“Amazing place to stay!”
. Rooms are spacious and clean. The baths on the top floor are a great addition. The footpath outdoor is a game changer after a long day walking. Highly recommend

Everything was technically fine and onsen was nice, but the hotel ended up being huge with 160 rooms, so it was also very crowded and overrun. You had to wait and queue for everything - in the reception, for the elevator, for shoe lockers, for breakfast, to fit into the onsen etc. Pretty annoying and definitely not cosy or serene.
