Overview
Located in the centre of Takayama Historic District, Ryokan Tanabe is one of the most historical ryokans in the city. It features Japanese-style rooms and free WiFi in all areas. Guests can request relaxing massage treatments or soak in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, which are made of rocks and cypress wood. Tanabe Ryokan is a 1-minute walk from Old Town and Takayama Jinya and a 5-minute walk from JR Takayama Train Station. It is a 15-minute bus ride from Hida No Sato Folk Village and a 40-minute drive away from Shirakawago. The air-conditioned rooms feature tatami (woven-straw) flooring and Japanese futon bedding. A TV, fridge, and tea/coffee maker are included in each. The en suite bathroom includes a bath. Free coffee is served at the lobby, and a common lounge with an Irori hearth is available for guests. A traditional multi-course meal is served for dinner, and a Japanese set menu is available for breakfast. Meals are served in the guests’ rooms.

Elegant Ryokan in the heart of Takayama, attentive and warm staff, rooms with beds and futons were comfortable and cosy, ensuite shower and toilet, good sized onsen, and very good kaiseiki dinner and breakfast. It was very close to the morning market, to the historical streets, shopping streets. And on site private parking for our car. Amazing stay, will come back.

“A great Ryokan experience with delicious meals”
The size of our room was great! Our 2 breakfasts and dinners were delicious and very filling. The location was central to everything that we wanted to visit and see We found we needed two futons rather than one (but the staff were very accommodating and this was no trouble)

“Amazing authentic ryokan and onsen experience”
This was a true authentic ryokan experience. Lovely staff, perfect location and delicious dinner two nights. We slept well on double futons and enjoyed the Onsen ( sitting outside in a warm tub while it was raining was so relaxing!) We will come again if we return to Takayama!

We really enjoyed our stay at Tanabe! Our room was clean and comfortable. The set dinner and breakfast menu was varied, plentiful and delicious. Felt like a really special experience. Lovely extras like welcome drink and amenities bag.
