“Peaceful, restful with delicious food!”
The property is in a great location, with hiking trails within a short distance and about 30 minutes from the kamikochi drop off. The room was perfect, clean and large, and the food was the absolute highlight - plentiful and delicious, by far the best we had in Japan. They were also helpful in accommodating our baby daughter, we had a separate dining room with low tables so we didn’t have to worry about disturbing other diners and could let her play on the floor whilst we ate, as well as having a little high chair to put her in to feed her, not a given when travelling in Japan! The onsens were great - all private and with 2 outdoor ones, meant they were easy to use when we were wanted to, one of the indoor ones had a larger area which was great to go in with the baby as she could hang out whilst we got in and out of the onsen.

“Peaceful onsen retreat in the Japanese Alps.”
We had a really memorable stay at Nakaodaira in Okuhida Onsengo. If you’re looking for a quiet, authentic ryokan experience in the Japanese Alps, this place is very special. A big highlight is that all the baths are private, with both indoor and outdoor options, so you can enjoy the onsen at your own pace. The number of guests is very limited, which makes the whole experience feel calm and exclusive. The meals were delicious and prepared by the owners themselves, and the hospitality felt very warm and personal.

“Best part of my trip in Japan”
I travelled many hours to get to this location and I was tired. But it was completely worth it. Beautiful area, completely relaxing and serene. The food is exceptional and the staff are kind and speak good English. I’d come back here again and stay at least a few nights.

“An unmissable retreat in the Japanese alps”
Amazing onsen and hotel design. You can tell the owners really love what they do. We had a very relaxing time here although we should have stayed longer to enjoy this wonderful retreat properly!

“A real ryokan experience”
It is a fabulous ryokan in a quiet area in Japanese Alps. Rooms are clean, spacious and very comfortable. Breakfasts and dinners are simply delicious. But the best af all - are onsens there - hot, mineral-rich, with a scent of a sulfur, relaxing like nowhere else. And the open-air onsen is just a top - so pleasant that almost impossible to leave.

“Wonderful homely ryokan”
Wonderful ryokan in the Japanese Alps. The private onsens were wonderful, especially the outdoor ones. Dinner and breakfast were a fabulous feast of local Jaoanese food. Has a very old fashioned feel that added to the charm.

Nakaodaira is a beautiful home located higher up in the hills. It is an additional 40 mins from hirayu onsen which is where most ppl get off at, but worth the travel if you want a more personal and private experience. It felt like I was staying at someone's house and the food was prepared with a lot of care and love. Overall a positive experience and would recommend others to stay here.

I can really recommend an overnight stay in this accommodation! It is best to book the overnight stay together with breakfast and dinner, as this is really delicious and traditional Japanese. A real experience. The journey from Takayama takes a little longer but is easily possible by bus. The journey from Takayama station takes about an hour (you pay on the bus, so it's best to bring cash). The bus back only runs three times a day, so you need to find out exactly when beforehand. The ryokan really offers a great experience! The onsen can be used on your own at any time. You sleep on traditional tatami and are provided with everything you need (Japanese robes to use the onsen, water, toothbrushes etc.). The food is particularly good: the owners cook themselves and prepare a five-course menu!

“A wonderful place to enjoy the mountains and onsen culture.”
We treated ourselves to 2 nights here and it was a lovely escape from busy touring. The inn is in a quiet rural location and has private indoor and outdoor onsen. The hosts are lovely and kind and make wonderful food. We were hoping to go up the cable car and do some hiking and the host was kind enough to give us the forecast the night before and again in the morning (which was solid rain). We changed plans and went to waterfalls and a cave instead. The outdoor onsen were really special and one of our best experiences in a month of travel. I'd love to go back again.

“Serene mountain get-away”
We had two amazing days staying here (May) as part of our honeymoon in Japan. The atmosphere in this small mountain hotel is very calming and peaceful, with a cozy welcoming lounge area and amazing inside/outside Onsen, surrounded by beautiful nature. One of the outside Onsen even offers a spectacular view on the snowy mountains! The host couple Akihiro and Naoko are very friendly, speak English, and offer amazing home cooked breakfast and dinner consisting of a tasting menu of local dishes which was exceptional (and different!) both days we stayed there. The collection of local whiskeys and liquors adds a nice touch. The area offers many hiking trails, and was easy to reach by bus from Takayama (90mins). I definitely recommend staying here and enjoying the scenery and lovely atmosphere!

This was our favourite ryokan we stayed in over our 2 weeks in Japan. The hosts were so warm and welcoming, and Naoko spoke English brilliantly which was very handy. Food was exceptional and beautifully presented. Both outdoor and indoor onsen facilities were the best we've come across in our travels of Japan. Location is serene and peaceful, nestled amongst the picturesque mountains of Chubu-Sangaku National Park. We also enjoyed trying our hand at origami in the lounge area. Highly recommend staying here.

“Beautiful and revitalizing experience”
Needed an express bus from Takayama for 1.5 hours which runs every one hour but it was a lovely place surrounded by mountains. Bus stop was 30 mins walk up really steep hill to the accommodation but the owner gave us a lift from/to the bus stop. Accommodation was spacious and beautiful lodge. It snowed a quite a lot in mid-April but it was so beautiful to be in a private hot spring outside while snowing. Due to snow we couldn’t see mountains much, so I would like to come back in summer for hiking.

The hotel’s owners were very welcoming and friendly and spoke good English, so communications was easy. The atmosphere in the house was super cozy and calm. The room was spacious and had everything we needed, and the same goes for the different onsen baths. Everything was very clean. The breakfast was excellent, too. All in all, this place exceeded our expectations by far and we’d recommend anyone visiting Japan to go there! ☺️
