Overview
This charming, 400-year-old timber framed hotel offers central, comfortable accommodation in the historical town of Stolberg in the southern Harz Mountains, Saxony-Anhalt. The Hotel Zum Kanzler lies on the picturesque market place, opposite the town hall. Guests can choose between rooms with views over the market place or of the nearby forest. A wide and varied buffet breakfast is provided, free of charge, in the mornings in the traditional-style restaurant. You can enjoy delicious regional cuisine here in the evenings, with ingredients supplied by the in-house butchers. Round off the evening, in fine weather, with a drink outside on the market place terrace.

Superb breakfast, lovely staff, wonderful location. The room was fine and the bed comfortable. Outdoor seating at the restaurant was comfy, the hotel has a nice atmosphere, and the food was good.

“Nostalgia, not so much of the 16th century, but the 1980’s!”
Stolberg is an unexpectedly charming town. The main road is lined on both sides with a seemingly unending row of similar-styled 4-storey half-timbered buildings, and Hotel Zum Kanzler is located directly in the centre of town where the main junction is. There’s barely any traffic, however this was not a quiet stay. We were in the hotel on the Friday night and there was a band playing outside, and people sitting out past midnight. The next morning we were woken early to the sound of benches and tables being set up, and then the thumping party music started at 9am! As we were checking out, a brass band was playing, and a market was in full swing in all directions. It was lovely to see that the town had an atmosphere, but this might have been bothersome to other travellers. Our room had 2 single beds parked away from each other, which was perfect for our requirements. We had dinner in the restaurant and were happy with the standard of food. Breakfast was confusing as was eventually shown to a table away from the breakfast room, and not offered any coffee. Perhaps the market outside was confusing matters??

Location was excellent, hotel restaurant food tasted delicious, check in staff was very cheerful and friendly, rooms were a bit old but very clean and had all basic amenities.
