The location and the owner were such a welcome gift during our holiday. The Refugio is located in an old beautifully renovated school of a village, old pictures of the kids are decorating the walls. The owner, a mountain guide too, was so kind, making great diner and breakfast, simple and perfect. Hij was nice to talk to, laugh with, he gave tips for hikes and we didn’t want to leave this special place. Everything, from the tranquility, to the hospitality, the view on the mountains and the ocean. The location in the subtropical part of the island.. it was breathtaking.

The host is the sole keeper of the light at this mountain refuge, preserving the life and spirit of the old schoolhouse in a world that has long since moved on.

A very beautiful place in a small village with the most amazing view. It s a calm place to rest your soul. The rooms are very clean, the beds cosy and comfortable. You can feel the owner's love for the place everywhere in the details. I would love to come back again one day.

Superb location on the island. Lots of character and great host with adorable dog Canario. Very clean, comfortable beds and hot water which for a mountain refugee in such a remote location was really impressive.

Nicola was a fantastic host at Refugio El Hornillo, welcoming guests by name on arrival. The place itself is a small and rustic settled in a beautfully remote part of the island. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a disconnect from society.

Very conveniently located refuge within a valley. Fantastic staff, speak great English and always happy to help. Delicious fresh bread and tasty meals on offer. Excellent spread of options for breakfast. Stunning views from the terrace.

El Hornillo is a true gem, great location for hikers and nature lovers, wonderful breakfast buffet and nice dinner in cosy atmosphere, welcoming host who shared his knowledge about the area and advised us on best hikes (it is so rare to be hosted by a real person these days) I hope to be back some day!

“Fabulous stay in hidden valley”

We were walking south to north over the island. The refugio fabulous set in a very quiet valley, where once 300 people lived in caves. The refugio used to be the school house. The owner Nicole was very friendly, spoke English and provided us with lasagna and desert. Breakfast was delicious Nicole explained a great route to follow for our day of walking via the campsite of tamadaba and down into Puerto de la nueves. We had booked a dorm room, but on arrival we asked for a double which we got.

Great location and in excellent conditions. (Not a hostel). The site also displays a selection of photographs from the local archive as well as other cultural items that give you a glimpse into life on the island, so you get a small museum experience on top of everything else. Also, although the restaurant does not technically cater for vegans, I was able to spend two days here eating all I needed to eat for breakfast and dinner.

“An exceptional place”

A steep road down takes you to a small square with an old little church and Refugio Hornillo next to it, a truly exceptional and romantic remote location in the mountains. The place has a very nice and unique atmosphere. The homemade food is delicious and the rooms are super clean.
