“A Perfect Stay Beside the Fortezza – Beautiful Views and a Great Location”

The property is ideal for anyone interested in history, as it’s built right next to the ancient walls of the Venetian Fortezza. You really feel connected to the heritage of the area. One of the highlights is the incredible views. The front of the property faces the town and the Fortezza, with snow‑capped mountains in the distance, making it the perfect place to enjoy the sunrise from the table and chairs outside. At the back, the garden looks straight out to sea with more mountain views, and you get an unobstructed, high‑level view of the sunset. When we visited, the garden was full of wildflowers and alive with bees and butterflies, which made it even more special. There are two chairs and a table, plus four seats made from logs, giving you plenty of places to relax. Inside, the main bedroom is a good size with a very comfortable bed and plenty of storage. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need if you want to prepare your own meals. We had a hire car, and the host, George, kindly met us on arrival to guide us into the parking area, which was a big help. That said, you don’t necessarily need a car to enjoy your stay here. If you’re visiting simply to relax and enjoy Cretan hospitality, there are lots of bars, restaurants and attractions within walking distance. We spent a lot of time just sitting in the garden, looking out to sea and watching the world go by. If you want to explore a bit further, there are local buses and a very good hop‑on hop‑off bus that takes you around the town and up into the hills. The property is only a short walk from the bustling old town, with its shops, tavernas and historic streets. There’s also a well‑stocked supermarket nearby that stays open late, which was really convenient. Overall, Casa Di Maria is a wonderful place to stay if you want history, views, comfort and easy access to everything Rethymno has to offer. We loved our time here and would happily return.

A lovely family apartment, beautifully perched along the side of a fortress — full of charm. Everything was spotless and very welcoming. The highlight, though, was the incredible view from the back garden, surrounded by spring flowers and a few friendly cats… just magical. A big thank you to Giorgos, who was extremely patient and kind, even though we kept him waiting after getting lost — on Easter day, no less! All in all, a wonderful experience. Thanks again!

“Lovely traditional property with amazing views”

A traditional house in an amazing setting. In the private garden at the foot of the walls to the 16th century fort you have incredible sea views with the snow capped mountains beyond - absolutely beautiful! You also have the option of sitting on the lovely patio to the front of the property which has lovely fort and town views.

A lovely and cozy getaway! 🏡 We absolutely enjoyed our stay at this charming vacation home. The house itself is beautifully decorated and feels incredibly warm and welcoming—it really made us feel at home even though we were far away. The yard is beautiful with lovely views, perfect for relaxing outdoors. The host was super friendly and welcoming—she even helped us carry our things and came to greet us in person. We also really appreciated that house cleaning was available upon request without any extra charge. Such a thoughtful touch! Location is great too, and there's parking just a short walk down the hill from the house—very convenient. As a bonus, there were a few friendly cats hanging around the property, which added to the cozy, countryside charm. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a peaceful and comfortable retreat!

Amazing views from the garden which is in the shadow of the fortress walls - very romantic Wonderful friendly and generous hosts - left us fruits and drinks and a well stocked kitchen. Comfy bed and a terrace at the front too. Everything was there for a comfortable stay.

The location is Stunning,proximity to the old town,yet a perfect retreat from the busy centre The accommodation is just perfect, everything you need is there some lovely little extra touches fruit in the fridge juice etc. Communication with George was excellent and effortless with some excellent recommendations. Loved this spot a real Oasis of calm.

“A very relaxing fortnight”

The location was really good next to many interesting places in Rethymno, yet far away from any noises. The place is really traditional, but well equiped with modern supplies. The home is really cosy and the best part of it is its breathtaking garden. You open the door and suddenly you find yourself in a serene garden full of trees and flowers. You can really enjoy yourself reading a book under an olive tree while the birds are singing and the noises of the waves are filling you with bliss. Last but not least, Giorgos, the host is very kind and ready to help you whenever you need. Can't wait to return.

Back again after four years and really best place to us in Rethymno, hidden gem on the small hill beside Fortezza wall! Lovely house next to local polite residents, other side that wonderfull sea view under old olive tree and from other side terrace you can see Rethymno town. And all within walking distance. Surely we come again, thanks to you best friendly host George!

Lovely characterful house in a very quiet residential neighborhood a short walk from the old town port. Lovely welcome on arrival. The house was very clean and well equipped. The garden and views were superb. Just wish we could have stayed longer.

My husband and I have stayed in many holiday homes over the last 36 years and we can honestly say that George was the best host we have ever had: thoughtful, generous, helpful and an extremely good communicator. Casa di Maria retained a delightful sense of the family history - enhanced by our meetings with George’s father who picked us the best fruit - combined with the all-important 21st century comforts and conveniences. The fruit-tree filled garden with its exquisite sea views was an absolute joy; we never tired of sitting there, whether reading, enjoying a cold drink or just gazing at the sunsets. The front terrace was perfect for shady relaxation during the day and for listening in to the evening concerts taking place at weekends in the stunning adjacent Venetian fortress. We would have liked to stay for ever.

The location was brilliant and George was a fantastic host who provided some tips for the area. Nothing was too much trouble. The garden was wonderful too and our daughter loved exploring it. Everything was very comfortable and we really enjoyed our stay.

Everything about Casa Di Maria was lovely and magical. The outdoor space is even more beautiful than it looks in the pictures. It's hard to capture. Fruit trees, ocean, mountains, town lights at night. An amazing place to have a glass of wine :) George was an amazing host as well. Very attentive and informative, answering my questions promptly always. He left plenty of fruit, water, and juice as well as a lovely bottle of wine to enjoy. The parking spot that came with the property was so handy, and the location could not have been more perfect. A very short walk to the centre of the old town, but far enough away to feel quiet and removed. I can't say enough about this property and the experience we had there. Thank you George!!!!
