“Best hostel I’ve ever stayed in: cozy, clean, lovely 🥰”
I love the Roots Family hostel! It’s cozy, relatively small and has SUCH a relaxed vibe! The owner herself is such a sweetheart and the personnel in general is really helpful and easygoing. I kept extending my stay and ended up staying there for 16 days! ❤️ Since it’s small, the guests really take care of their stuff in the kitchen, which makes it clean! I stayed in the only dorm they have. Coziest dorm I have ever stayed in. It’s kind of spacious, has lots of opportunities to hang your clothes to dry and feels like you have a lot of privacy with the curtain. The location is great, in only two minutes you’re by the beach - but this exact road is not that busy. All in all, this is the best hostel I’ve ever stayed in. I wish all the staff the best and would definitely come back!

Very central location, bike rental right at the hostel. Very welcoming people that work and volunteer there. We had a hostel Christmas dinner which was lovely!

“Awesome stay!”
My stay at Roots Family has been amazing... The beach, restaurants, shops, atms are all within walking distance... Bribri is a short drive away... The staff and owner are welcoming and have been attentive to my requests... The lounge is cosy and the room spacious enough... Neighbors are night owls and love a good party... The cats are pretty tamed but Carlitos can get a little naughty... But this adds to the charm of the place as was the rainy season... Highly recommend if you're in Puerto Viejo

“Could be lovely, but raw sewage smell is a real deal breaker”
Lovely volunteers who can’t do enough to help you. Family vibe, safe community feel with WhatsApp group to notify you of events in the town. Communal areas are nice and kept clean. Kitchen is a plus for saving money for longer stays allowing us to prep cheap breakfasts. We stayed in a private room which was well equipped and comfortable for backpacker style lodgings.

Great location close to everything in the town. We had private room with toilet and shower, really appreciated the mosquito net. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and also place to store your food and nice chill out area. Also lots of daily tips what you can do :)

“A nice hostel, but beware no aircon.”
Staff were friendly and helpful. Cheap rental bikes are available. It is in a good location near the center of town and close to the beach.

We stayed at 3 places in Puerto Viejo, and this place was the best of them all. Super-helpful young people working there and a lot of nice other packpackers to chat to. They could recommend a lot of nice things to do, they rent out bicycles and also arrange trips and shuttle to other places. If I go back, I will definitely stay here again.

Stuff was very nice and helpful, providing tips for the area! WhatsApp group with daily recommendations was very nice! The mosquito curtain above the bed was very useful, as in the night there were a lot of mosquitoes around.

“A comfortable stay”
