Weingut Stein is in a wonderful location near the vineyards, the river Nahe and the highest mountain on the Nahe, the Lemberg. Rainer Schneider was kind enough to give us a brief tour of the winery. He explained the diverse soil types in the Nahe valley, using three framed pictures of the soil found in the Nahe valley, and the influence the different soils have on the wine flavour. After we unpacked and changed clothes, Rainer drove us up to the Waldgasthaus Lemberghütte to show us the panorama. He spent a few minutes pointing to various interesting locations in the vista, telling us a little about them, and giving a little history about the region. (Did you know that the river Nahe was once the border between Bavaria and Prussia?) Rainer left us to enjoy the hiking trail on the Lemberg back down to Oberhausen. He was very generous with his time. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The bed was cosy, firm and ideal for couples in which one partner moves around a lot in his sleep. The bathroom had a walk in shower with good water pressure. There was also a sauna in the bathroom which we will definitely use the next time we stay there. I should add that the kitchen had all mod cons including a coffee machine with a selection of coffee capsules. The fridge was stocked with a bottle of Riesling, two bottles of bubbly and a bottle of sparkling water. All on the house. We only had time to consume a bottle of bubbly before dinner at Hermannshöhle Restaurant & Vinothek. Rainer was kind enough to gift us a bottle of Weingut Stein's signature Müller-Thurgau when we departed.
