“A charming experience with thoughtful touches”
“A charming experience with thoughtful touches” All the extra touches made this stay special — from the water bottle placed in the bed to the welcoming tea on arrival. The gardens were absolutely stunning, and I loved staying somewhere with such rich history, especially knowing the Queen had visited. The bar was well priced, and overall, the ‘Little England’ atmosphere was exactly what I hoped for. A truly memorable experience.

“Excellent experience!”
At exactly 7:15 pm each evening, the club delivers hot water bottles to your room! That just made my day! A very cold building indeed as much heating possible is needed!

“Thoroughly enjoyable”
A fantastic piece of history nestled in the hills and tea plantations of Sri Lanka. The staff here go above and beyond to make your stay special and are all very helpful and smiley/ friendly. The breakfast is an amazing selection with large portions and the food in general is delicious with a good variety of cuisine. There are some rules in terms of dress code but frankly I think this is refreshing and being surrounded by guests and staff that take pride in their appearance and want to have special evenings on their holiday was a nice change from the casual flip flops, vests and shorts you often see nowadays. The character and history along with the staff made the place a great stay.

“A real piece of history”
We stayed here for the old world experience and that is what you get when you stay there. Our huge room overlooking the beautiful garden had a massive bed and was comfortable. No modern fittings of course. The staff varied, some friendly but others really too formal. My husband's borrowed jacket and tie looked perfect and the formal dining was fun. Food quite good. Breakfast ok too. We really felt we had stepped back in time.

“Old-fashioned colonial values, which have their upsides and downsides”
The hotel's location was central and dramatically framed against a hill behind, with the town's famous golf course below. The large gardens were immaculate, with food grown for the hotel, and there is some charm in a formality now largely gone in Britain, even if the place is a little frayed. Although I had hoped for - and thought I had booked - a room in the main hotel, my modern room was large and comfortable and, like so many others, I appreciated the hot water bottle and bed time cookies. Many of the staff were charming and informative, especially Hashim, who has been there for many years and does a little tour of the front of house. The hotel also arranged a car to pick me up at Nanu Oya station.

“Beautiful heritage property in Central Nuwara Eliya.”
This is a beautiful heritage property in the middle of Nuwara Eliya. Despite the location it is very quiet as it is set in large gardens well back from any noisy roads. The room we had was spacious and very comfortable. There was also a large attached bathroom with everything you might need. The view over the garden was wonderful. Breakfast is served in the large dining area complete with all the original fixture and fittings. There's also a large lounge and old fashioned bar and most of the walls in the building are adorned with lovely old black and white photographs. The place has a lovely atmosphere. All the staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was ordered from the menu and was delicious. We have stayed here before, during COVID times when we were virtually the only guests there. But it's equally a very pleasant stay even when full. I would highly recommend it even though it is pretty expensive.

“Great spot amazing staff but a bit basic”
Fascinating place to stay... as a Brit always slightly mixed feelings about staying somewhere with colonial roots but so interesting... great location and wonderful staff. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they even put hot water bottles in the beds !!

“I last stayed here 45 years ago and not much has changed ! In other words it needs an upgrade.”
A good location in serious need of an upgrade and probably refurbishment. Food average and could be upgraded. Very willing staff.

“Take yourself back in time!”
The Hill Club is steeped in colonial history and provided us with a special experience, from playing snooker on one of the full-size tables, to a formal dinner followed by a drink by the log fire all rounded off with hot water bottles at bed-time! The guide-books warn you that you will need to dress up for dinner, but that is not the full story. If you don't have the required jacket and tie, they will help you out. In any event, there is an "informal' bar and 'informal' restaurant with the same offerings and prices. I was very impressed with my set menu dinner, and my wife was happy with her vegetarian a la carte choice. There is a large lawn in front of the hotel surrounded by colourful, manicured, flower-beds. If you are staying at the hotel, the golf course just below is well-worth a visit as well. It was founded around the same time and has its own interesting history. We enjoyed a very good English breakfast there. It is only a 5 minute walk if you enter the grounds via the workshop entrance.
