First of all the man at the reception (Teun) was absolutely awesome and friendly. Its a pity we did not have more time to hang out with him during the evening at the reception. The placement of this hotel is superb, the rooms super charming. Would stay again and would recommend it to friends.

Excellent city-centre location. Lovely historical building with charming room. Ours had a big sunny terrace, which was a bonus. Friendly, smiling staff. Nice bar / café to hang out during the day or evening.

Very nice building in city centre. From the hotel you can walk anywhere. Very comfortable bed. Cozy nicely decorated room.

We had a deluxe double room with bath that was a little tricky to heat (when we checked out they explained that there was a second heating system in the room, which we did not see). It was large room with high ceiling, which made the room as little less comfortable then I would have liked. However, it was a beautiful room. When we stay the next time, I will take a smaller room which I find more comfortable. The restaurant in the Souterrain was amazing. If it is open, I would definitely suggest a visit. It is heavily vegetarian but very superior! Also important for us: there was a Q park across the street.

Lovely hotel in a convenient location on the edge of the center of town. Beautiful, well-appointed room in keeping with the historic building, lovely breakfast and hospitable staff. Will come again!

“Dutch Charm with a View”

Corps de Garde, Groningen — Dutch Charm with a View Some hotels feel like they could be anywhere. This one couldn’t be anywhere but here. Corps de Garde is a great little Dutch hotel in the truest sense—practical without being plain, warm without fuss, and perched right at the entrance to Groningen’s old town. Step outside and the city opens up like a map you want to get lost in. The restaurant? Exceptionally good—actually, really good—and the breakfast they bring you in the morning is brilliant. Fresh, thoughtful, unhurried. The rooms carry that same Dutch sensibility: clean lines, plenty of light, and in my case, one very large main room with lots of space to stretch out. The showers are excellent. It’s a hotel that works for motorcyclists, too—safe underground parking sits right across the way, so you can tuck your bike in without worry. The service is just right: friendly, attentive, without the over-scripted smile. The kind of staff you actually want to talk to. Sure, my room overlooked the street, which meant privacy could be a challenge—but close the curtains, pour a drink, and you’ve got all you need. Good service, good company, good food. Very Dutch. And that’s the highest compliment I can give.
