The staff were very helpful before and during my stay. Access to the closest chairlift was only a 5 minute walk, and from here you could ski down to the main gondola after gaining a bit of skiing experience (the start of the track is a bit steep and narrow). They also have a limited shuttle service to the main gondola area. The accommodation itself is pretty basic, but also far better value than the more expensive resorts closer to the town centre. There is a large drying room and lockers for all ski equipment.

I have to start this review with a "disclaimer : we are 70 and we don't ski. Nozawa Onsen is a ski resort ; it follows that virtually all accommodation there is targeting a very specific audience of young, often Australian, skiers. Unlike European ski resorts, which can be very glamorous, Nozawa has not much to offer beside that. We had the misfortune to book Altitude when the Fire Festival was happening ; to secure a booking, we had to comply with their "minimum 3 nights booking", so ended up paying ¥97,000 for a 2-night stay (or about AUD 450 per night that we used). When we arrived the receptionist Beke was very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a "no shoes" policy, so you leave them on a rack and wear the provided slippers. We got room 218 with nice views over the valley. It had a double and single bed, both a bit saggy and the carpet was badly stained. A small TV against the wall which we found rather difficult to operate and with limited options ; the furniture was basic plywood, the bathroom a tiny plastic box - much as you have in a caravan. Our room never got serviced. Breakfast is next to the reception and there is a basic choice of Western food (some cereals, croissant and condiments) and they do a different hot dish every morning. The staff are hard pressed to keep up and not very much "on the ball". To us the place felt more like a backpackers resort and it certainly did not warrant the money we paid. But I guess if you're young, you ski and you're hardly in your room, Altitude could be a good option. At least you'd be among your peers.

We had a comfortable room. Everything you need is provided - breakfast included (everyday there was a hot breakfast option and in 7 days we didn’t see a repeat); free use of washing machine and well priced use of dryer; microwave available all day to use in kitchen; bar at night if you wanted a drink. We’d take early shuttle to ski hill/gondola, then we could ski back to carpark 2 - less than 10 mins walk back to hotel at end of day which was convenient. All the staff were friendly and worked so hard! They’re all international so if you need assistance (ie we had to order a taxi to our next stop in Yamanouchi - the tourist info centre near Chuo were better to assist with this). It was very good value for money and maybe has a bit of a hostel vibe but it was nice to chat to people (and staff) from lots of countries and age groups.

Despite all the negatives, we enjoyed our stay at Altitude Nozawa. We booked the King room and it was very spacious with beautiful views of the snowy town below. The bed was huge and comfortable and the room had heating so we were cozy coming out of the cold at the end of the day. The location for skiing was good, it is just down the road from some lifts that give you access to the slopes and other gondolas. Just note that if you take the lift up, it is not easy to get back down to the same starting location, so at the end of the day you do have to walk 10-20 minutes back to the hotel (if you don’t take the town shuttle bus) The hotel also has a shuttle in the morning so you don’t have to walk with equipment (between 7-8:30). There is a washing machine and dryer in the communal area which were handy. The staff were contactable over WhatsApp and fairly good at responding. They gave us a lift with our luggage to the bus stop on our last day which was very welcome.
