Perfect stay in Shima Onsen! Highly recommend

The staff were exceptional, the food amazing and the serenity unbeatable. The locals also were extremely welcoming.

“The BEST ryokan in Shima Onsen”

Kashiwaya is simply the perfect ryokan. We stayed in a Japanese traditional room with the most stunning view of the surrounding mountains. As there are only 14 rooms, every guest was treated like royalty by the most incredible staff. There are three private Onsen to choose from and an easy light system to know when they’re free to use. The facilities were fantastic, the onsen sublime, and we loved having free coffee in the library. The food experience was extra special. A tasting menu with every dish so thoughtfully considered, prepared and it tasted amazing. I have to mention how special it was that the staff remembered it was our honeymoon and they not only congratulated us but prepared a special dessert for us. Thank you for making us feel so wonderful. Everything was special down to the smallest detail, including stickers to personalise your slippers, the wide variety of colourful yukata and even remembering which outside shoes were ours after the stay.

“Picturesque Mountainside Views and Relaxing Onsen”

Traditional authentic experience staying at this picturesque ryokan. Beautiful views of the mountains and river below from our balcony. Staff were polite, friendly and attentive. A direct bus was organised for us by hotel staff from Tokyo for additional charge. Vegan kaiseki (multi course) breakfast and dinner were offered. Private onsen were exceptional (and very hot as they are natural!). Free bicycles provided for us to explore the town and surrounds.

From start to finish, the staff took great care of us—friendly, attentive, and always helpful. The room was spacious enough and offered beautiful river views. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely amazing. The three private open-air onsens were a truly special experience.

This was one of the most special stays on our trip. The traditional rooms were lovely and the food was really good. The highlight was the private onsen, and snow in the morning making the experience even more magical. I would absolutely return.

This is such a beautiful Ryokan with amazing staff who you can tell really care about Kashiwaya. It was our first Ryokan experience and could not be faulted. The meals were some of the best we've ever had (the vegan option which was exquisite) and it felt home!y and warm being there from the foyer to the rooms to the dining. We loved sitting on the balcony enjoying some staff picked sake as it started snowing while we wore our yukatas! And again being in the private onsens (our first time!) as it started snowing...it was something we will not forget.We'll be back next time we're in Japan and were sad to leave. Thanks to all the staff there for a beautiful and meaningful experience.

It was my first time staying at a ryokan and it exceeded my expectations. From the warm welcome and care of each staff member to the all the extras, my stay was absolutely perfect. the meals are exceptional and having three private onsen on top of the public bath was such a treat. I wish I could have stayed longer and will certainly try to come back

We loved this place, Ryoka-san and the rest of the staff (Andrew-san, Fuka-san, Mika-san) were super helpful and lovely. The rooms were spacious and clean, the onsen had public and private options, and the food was simply out of this world. Thank you Ryoka-san and Kashiwaya staff!

“Convenient and highly recommended onsen town”

I like the private onsen which is well maintained. I commend the staff - front desk, dining hall and to the one who welcome and send me off. apparently, i met the owner 3x in just one night of stay. He offered a ride to the town but i didnt know he is so i declined.

I absolutely adore this ryokan, it's the second time I've been here and it's just amazing. The staff are super lovely, the hotel is huge and clean and smells great, it has three private beautiful hotsprings, and the food is amazing. They said it would be a bit tough to make vegetarian food for one person, but every day I had a personalized menu and it was so delicious! The whole town is just adorable and the hiking in the area is great.
