Beautiful natural surroundings, amazing outdoor hot springs. Excellent dinner, high quality Japanese banquet food. Good sake selection. Hot springs indoors were just as good.

“The place needs some serious TLC, but the nature is beautiful. Would recommend finding a better-managed onsen elsewhere.”
Amazing views of the river and the mountains. It was fun to experience a traditional room and to sleep on futons.

An incredible riverside onsen surrounded by deep forest and mountains, featuring four large outdoor baths alongside the beautiful Takaragawa River. The ryokan provides simple bathing outfits for guests — women are given a one-piece wrap-style garment, while men receive short bathing wraps to wear in the onsen. There are three mixed-gender outdoor baths where couples can bathe together, as well as one women-only bath. The staff mentioned that guests are also allowed to bathe without clothing, but honestly, the baths feel quite open and visible from different angles — especially from the nearby bridge — so I personally would not feel comfortable doing that. Interestingly, there were almost no Japanese guests during our stay. Most visitors were Western travelers, Chinese, and Thai tourists. It seemed completely normal for people to use their phones and create content around the onsen area, probably because everyone was wearing bathing outfits. I imagine many Japanese visitors might feel uncomfortable with the idea of wearing clothing in an onsen, although that is just my assumption. We stayed in the oldest building, the First Annex, which was the original ryokan building and seems to be the most popular among travelers — especially the corner room where we stayed. From the balcony, we could see a waterfall flowing down from the mountains and enjoy panoramic river views from both the front and side of the room. The constant sound of the flowing stream created an incredibly relaxing atmosphere throughout the stay. This annex has only six rooms across two floors, with three rooms per floor, and a bridge directly connecting the building to the outdoor onsen area. Because of this, it is the most convenient building if you plan to spend a lot of time soaking in the baths. The downside is that the rooms do not have private bathrooms, so guests need to use the shared restrooms located on each floor. However, it was not inconvenient at all. The shower area and indoor bath

“Unforgettable magical place!”
My husband and I came for our honeymoon and we received extra attention and treatment. Everyone was extremely polite and friendly. We found the rooms comfy and super nice to experience the traditional culture. The food at breakfast and dinner exceeded our expectations!! Everything was INCREDIBLE and DELICIOUS. Sooo much food😍 we couldn’t be happier with this place!! The indoor and outdoor baths were so nice. We even experienced the separated gender tradicional baths and felt really comfortable to be there. We are coming back FOR SURE. The place looks like a fairytale ❤️

The ambiance was still very traditional Japanese even though more than half the clients were non Japanese. I enjoyed all the baths, woman's outside bath very nice. The cold fresh drinking water was wonderful. I recommend a very cold pool on the premises near the hot springs. I drenched myself with the drinking water which was wonderful!

“This is not a stay it is an experience!”
Oh my, this place is very special! Accessing the onsen took 2 minutes and it was open until midnight. We didn’t go out after dark, though, as it was -1°C and a couple of us were already unwell. I’ve stayed in another ryokan where you book private onsens, whereas here there are several open-air onsen pools available. Being provided with a yukata and spa wear really makes the experience feel extra special—much preferred this style. The food and customer service were exceptional. I would come back every chance I get.
