Extremely peaceful setting in the middle of the dunes. Dinner was amazing and it was really nice to chat to Mohamed about the desert and life there.

My stay at Erg Chegaga Berber Camps was a once-in-a-lifetime experience (though, another guest there was already visiting for the third time, which says a lot.) Everything felt authentic. It didn’t feel performative or touristy like some of the more luxurious desert camps (especially compared to places around Erg Chebbi). Muhammed, who started the camp about 20 years ago as one of the first in Erg Chegaga, and Ali are genuinely part of the nomadic desert lifestyle. You can feel that in every detail and their vibe. They were incredibly relaxed and welcoming, and both nights they played music for us, which added something really special to the experience (see the video I uploaded). The location is truly remote, the nearest town is about 2–3 hours away, and you can only reach the camp by 4x4. Transfers can be arranged directly with the camp (around €90 return per reservation), larger groups may need an extra vehicle. There’s a real sense of slowing down here. The camp itself is simple, but that’s exactly where its luxury lies. Breakfast is included and modest but tasty, and dinner (around 120 dirham) is absolutely worth it. Evenings are incredibly peaceful, just silence, the desert, and a sky full of stars. If you’re looking for something genuine, quiet, and deeply connected to the desert, this place is something special.

The stay was more than we expected. Ali, the host, took us from Mahamid for very resonable price and gave us a tour to the deasert. Tents very clean and comfortable, food was amazing and they even prepared bonfire for us. You could use sandboards for free. Ali was very kind, funny and open to conversations by bonfire. He made our stay unforgettable.

Perfect Berber hospitality in a small camp adjacent to the high dunes, cosy tents, marvellous meals and comfortable rugs around a wood fire at night for stargazing, quite magical.

“Short adventure in the desert”
Easy to arrange pick-up from M'Hamid for ~2hr transfer. Camp is in the dunes (near the edge). Just stayed a single night to get the feel of the desert - stars, freezing cold at night (in February), fantastic experience watching a sunset and dawn over the dunes. Clean and comfortable in the tents. Excellent meal served in the evening.

“An unforgettable and authentic desert experience”
Ali picked us up in M'hamid. We felt very comfortable in Ali's car during the approximately 2-hour drive (60 km) to the Chegaga Berber Camps. The driving service costs 900 MAD (€90) for 2 people. Ali speaks English quite well. Once you arrive at the Chegaga Berber Camp, you first move into your tent and are then served typical Moroccan tea and pastries. After that, you have free time until dinner. After the beautiful sunset, we returned to the Chegaga Berber Camp. It is highly recommended not to walk too far from the camp, otherwise you run the risk of getting lost among the sand dunes. You should definitely record your route with a GPS tracker so that you can find your way back. If you are planning a long tour into the desert, it is advisable to do so with Ali or his brother Mohamed. Dinner started with a kind of vegetable soup, followed by a very good tagine with vegetables and beef. Then there was fruit salad for dessert. Dinner costs 130 MAD (€13) per person. You can also buy water from Ali or his brother Mohamed at any time. Afterwards, a campfire was prepared and we spent the evening together. At this point, we would like to mention that you can hear many animals at night and occasionally some animals scratch at the tent wall. In the morning, there was a fine breakfast with really good scrambled eggs, bread, jam, etc. After that, you have the day at your leisure and you can do sand surfing for free, for example. Basically, there is the option of riding a camel or going on a hike. We took a walk in the desert and were served Moroccan tea and pastries in the afternoon. Basically, there is the option of showering in the communal bathroom. There are toilets, but you have to scoop the flush water yourself from a water bucket using a kind of ladle. After breakfast, it was time to say goodbye.

We had an outstanding experience at Chegaga Berber Camp. The staff were incredibly friendly, and both the breakfast and dinner were absolutely delicious. The accommodations were comfortable, with cozy beds and a great atmosphere overall. We were picked up in the village of Hamid for 90 euros round-trip, and all communication was smoothly handled via WhatsApp. There were plenty of activities to enjoy at the camp, like playing pétanque or surfing on the sand dunes. Ali was amazing—he arranged a camel ride for us and made sure everything was perfect. In the evenings, we had a fantastic time singing around the campfire with Mohamed, Ali, Mustapha, and other guests. It was one of the best experiences we’ve had all year. I highly recommend staying for at least two nights and taking a three-hour walk to the high dune to soak in the local atmosphere. It was truly a unique opportunity. Thanks to the entire team for this exceptional experience!

We absolutely loved the place. We stayed two nights. It is close to the high dunes so after going up two or three dunes you will have a perfect view of the sunset. Ali and Mohamed are very welcoming and make you feel like home. I also sandboarded around for no extra charge, a nice bonus. We were lucky as in we were the only ones there the first night and only had a another couple the other night which also made quite quiet Would definitely recommend

“Unique experience!”
If you're looking for a peaceful, relaxed time in the middle of the desert, you will absolutely enjoy this camp! The pickup from M'hamid was flawless, the 4x4 ride quite an experience in itself. Once we arrived at the camp we were stunned by the beautiful athmosphere of the surroundings. The camp is small and even when fully booked there wont be many people, which we appreciated a lot. The host and staff was always friendly and helpful, tea and water whenever you like. Dinner was prepared with love and theres nothing quite like dining under the stars surrounded by sand dunes. Night time athmosphere was unforgettable. Oh and the little spontaneous camel ride with Omar and his camels was just lovely! We absolutely recommend coming to Chegaga Berber Camps, you will not regret it!

“Excellent and authentic!”
Recommend a visit! The Berbers running the camp are lovely and friendly and can arrange to collect you from Mhamid (90€ for 2 in a 4x4 currently). Bumpy ride warning! They can also arrange a camel trek with healthy, well looked after camels, if you'd like. The beds are comfortable in the tents, or you can sleep outside if its too hot. There are 2x showers and toilets, but water is limited in water cubes so try to be reserved with usage. There was one multiplug available for charging but bring a power pack just in case. The food was all brilliant; breakfast was plentiful and the tagines were some of the best we had in Morocco.

“Simply unique and fantastic for those who care more about the experience than luxury”
The location is wonderful and so is Mohammed and his staff. The food was delicious. Water for the shower is limited and the tents are simple. Please remember that you will be in the Sahara. It’s quite special that there is water at all. And personally I prefer the camp to be simple to have little impact on the environment. The drive from M’Hamid costs 90 euros per two persons. The return trip is included. We wanted to go west, so Mohammed was so kind to drive us to the other side. It cost 100 euros extra, which was very much worth it. That was a 4 hour off road journey I will never forget. The nature was just breath taking and Mohammed explained many interesting things about the life of the nomads

The location of the camp is stunning. Wish we would have stayed here for an extra day. Our room was basic, but comfortable. The kids were really excited, everything around them was a huge playground. The jeep ride from M'hamid took around 1h40'.

Amazing experience in the dunes of Erg Chigaga. The location just in the middle of the dunes is perfect and very relaxing. Mohammed was very friendly and nice. The transfer to the camp was interesting as we were going through a desert storm so it took over 2 hours. On the way back, it took 1.5 hours. Transfer was for 90€. I would definitely go to this camp again for more nights. 🙂
