Overview
A 5-minute drive from National Treasure Matsumoto Castle, Ryokan Seifuso is next to Shinshu University and boasts a view of the Northern Alps and the freshness of the Metoba River. It is ideal for sightseeing such as Kamikochi, a mountainous scenic spot, Norikura Kogen, which has abundant trekking courses, Azumino, an original landscape of Japan blessed with Dosojin and spring water, and Utsukushigahara Kogen, which was praised by Kihachi Ozaki, a mountain poet. There are many overseas visitors from over 30 countries every year (English available) for sports camps, and university seminars. The air-conditioned rooms are equipped with a refrigerator, TV and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. Ryokan Seifuso is entirely non-smoking. Free parking (2 locations, 12 spaces, on-site), free rental bicycles and chargeable electric bicycles for sightseeing in the city. For meals, freshly prepared seasonal Japanese dishes are served. Western breakfast is available upon request (reservation made at reception), and vegetarian options are also available. The mellow honey yogurt from the eldest son of a beekeeper is extremely popular.

“Cosy, warm, real Japanese!”
Family run place and they do it with passion. From the check-in to breakfast to check-out, every interaction is done with passion and true warm hospitality. And it was the best breakfast we had on our trip. If we come to Matsumoto again, we would definitely stay here.

“Will stay longer next time!”
I wish I could score higher than 10! This is a ryokan, so humble and heartfelt is what you should expect. The mother daughter pair who run this place work very hard and it’s obvious in how they look after you. I arrived far later than the agreed upon time due to unforeseen circumstances but they were understanding and stayed at the reception longer than needed to make sure I had a proper welcome. I was really looking forward to the breakfast they offered and I was super impressed! Super yummy and balanced and an awesome way to start the day. I forgot ryokan come with shared baths but this became a blessing after long travel days and long hikes at Kamikochi. My room was a single but it was plenty of space for me. It had everything I needed and more. The futon was super comfortable. They went above and beyond and offered to drop me off to the station when they saw that I was scared about missing my train. I wish I stayed longer! Thank you so much again for having me!

“Charming Ryokan.”
A charming Ryokan a few kilometres out of Matsumoto centre. Quiet and with exceptional staff, it is a great place to stay outside the busy centre. It is only a 30 walk to the castle. The staff were delightful, great English and delicious breakfast provided.

“A must stay!”
Everything! The host and her mother have got a great ryokan on their hands here. They have thought of everything and it was the most comfortable I felt on the trip (that could have been the onsen too haha). And the breakfast was to die for!!

I stayed with son for two nights. We booked it as we wanted to try traditional Japanese style hotel. It was very new experience for us, especially using the communal onsen. But we both liked it. It was a bit confusion with the separate slippers which we had to use in the bathroom and couple of time I forgot to change them. Sorry for that! The owners, old lady and her daughter did a great job! We had booked bus to National park at 5.30am and couldn't book taxi for that early time , so the daughter of the owner has offered to take us to the bus station . We are very appreciated for this help, otherwise we would have to walk for 45 min. Everything was clean , including sharing bathroom and onsen, I wish we had more time to stay here and explore Matsumoto.

Very friendly and helpfull staff. Cozy place and room. Althrough the bathroom is shared, I never had any issue there due to being a limited number of rooms. They rent a bike for a good price which is a great way to explore the city. Confortable indoor onsen.

Lovely owners. Good breakfast. Having in-house onsen is lovely, especially as someone with a tattoo. No issues at all.
