Marburg offers only two air-conditioned hotel options within 600m of the main train station (a third choice is well over a kilometer away), and as my stay in the city coincided with the lead-up to a popular summer festival, I was fortunate to get a room the Vila Vita and was very happy with the experience. While its price point reflects the hotel’s upscale status, one definitely gets one’s money worth, and the rate is nevertheless less than what one might pay for lesser digs in a tourist trap such as München. The breakfast is phenomenal, served in an expansive, light-filled restaurant and offering every option that one could ever desire (including scrambled eggs with spinach — a very fine recipe). Better still, the splendid Frühstück is served from 6:00, a full half-hour earlier than most German hotels. This, combined with the proximity to the Hauptbahnhof made it possible for me to fully enjoy the hotel’s lavish breakfasts and still catch early trains for day trips. (I cannot overstate the advantages that early breakfasts provide for the sightseeing traveller). The hotel’s laundry service returns clothing the very next day and in impeccable condition. The rooms are expansive, offering plenty of space in which to lay out one’s wares, and include desirable amenities such as tea-making facilities and a mini-fridge, not to mention a genuine shower cabinet rather than a shower-tub combination, as is common in German hotels. The balconies are large and nicely laid out. For my four-day stay, I was permitted an early check in (a privilege that I associate with the best hotels) and, as an extra perk, was allowed to leave my luggage at the hotel on check-out day for free to enjoy yet another day trip, then collect my bags later for an effortless accommodation change (and would have gladly stayed here another three days, but the hotel was booked).

I always chose this hotel when I'm visiting Marburg. Staff is polite and kind, breakfast and dinner is great. The view from my room is nice.
