highly recommend being very careful before booking I this hotel, especially if you are a tourist from the United States and use U.S. dollars. As you may know, Peru uses the sol as its currency. When we booked this hotel at the last minute, the room was clearly advertised with the sol currency symbol. I paid close attention because I have been misled in the past and wanted to avoid any confusion. The room was advertised as the last available room for 700 soles, described as having a “beautiful view.” When we arrived, we were asked to sit on a sofa for check-in and were served a Peruvian specialty juice. I will admit that at first everything seemed surreal and pleasant. However, after a long flight, we were exhausted and asked to proceed with registration. At that point, the front desk staff brought an iPad and informed us that a $200 U.S. dollar deposit was required. We questioned why the deposit was in dollars when the room had been booked in soles. The staff member apologized and stated that there had likely been a “misunderstanding” in the advertisement, claiming the room price was actually $700 USD, not 700 soles. By then, we were already at the hotel and extremely tired, so we reluctantly decided to stay. To my extreme disappointment, the room was very small, and the so-called “beautiful view” was nothing more than dense plants pressed against the window. Even worse, the Cusco train tracks were less than 100 feet away, and we could clearly hear every Inca Rail train departure throughout the night. Needless to say, we did not sleep at all. To make matters worse, the $200 deposit was never returned. Instead, our credit card was charged a month later. My boyfriend has already initiated a dispute with the credit card company. During checkout, hotel staff sent someone to inspect our room in our presence to ensure that NOTHING was missing. This was humiliating. We knew this was happening because staff were communicating through walkie-talkies.

They start serving breakfast from 5 a.m. so it helps if you have an early time slot at Machupicchu. Among the various hotels we stayed during our visit to South America, Smaq Machupicchu was the only hotel where a “standard room” had a bathtub.

Excellent hotel with superb staff. We didn't book tickets for Machu Picchu but the hotel staff helped us navigate the very complex system to buy tickets and we had a fantastic stay overall. Reception and dining staff were always trying to make us feel welcome and were simply amazing.

All the staff we came into contact with were very attentive, professional and friendly. The room was large, comfortable and clean. Breakfast was superb with wide selection of foods and drinks.
