The house needs maintenance. There was spoiled food in the fridge. No drinking water or soap in the bathroom. The pool looked like it had never been cleaned. The host was hanging out in the place while I wasn't there. Despite renting the whole place I didn't feel like I was there alone. Also, the place is close to the Mosque so expect to be woken up at 4 every morning. The check out was at 10am and at 9:30 the host came to the house with another guest and a cleaning lady. I had a horrible stay.

The location is great. The top floor had a really nice view and breeze. Great place to chill. The staff were very helpful with finding and arranging boat captains, although negotiation is up to you. Very good value for money.

It’s a beautiful house in the historical center, very nearby the jetty and the main road and the market. The house in itself is beautiful and well renovated has 3 floors, many rooms and bathrooms and a wonderful terrace. Julius and Grace who work there took care of our family. Breakfast is not included you can use the kitchen or ask a cook to come and cook for you and pay for her job

The staff Julius was warm and friendly.

The host was gracious and responsive. Zion was exceptionally helpful and kind. They went above and beyond to ensure we had a splendid time. We will DEFINITELY be back. The house is huge, very spacious and true Lamu style. Very close to the jetty. and main centres. Our stay was quite short, we wished we had more time to relish the space.

It was our first time in Lamu and Alejandra and Zion were great hosts, the communication was easy and they were very supportive. The house is beautiful and very authentic, it gives a very unique Lamu experience. It is located in the center of Lamu town, 2 minutes walk from the harbor. The breakfast was made by Zion and it was delicious. Zion was a great help during the two days we spent at the house.

The house is beautiful and has a lot of character as you would hope/expect when staying in Lamu town. Caretaker Zion is wonderful and arranged everything we wanted. Transportation from/to the airport by Abdul was flawless and with a big smile of hospitality.

Great place! Beautiful house, just look at the pictures on booking.com. It really is like that. Mister Zion who takes care of the place is a very good host, very pole pole. We all got very relaxed in the house, could have stayed there for weeks.

“Memorable stay in a charming house full of special spaces”

Amazing house full of charme and history. We loved the roof top and enjoyed hanging out in the different spaces across the house. The plunge pool was a great plus too and it was easy to spend hours whiling away just reading and taking in the atmosphere. Caretake Zion was very discreet and helpful. The kitchen had all we need. The location is close to a range of restaurants and shops situated in Lamu Old Town. This was a great space for a family of four but can easily accommodate larger groups as it has various bed rooms/sleeping spaces and multiple bathrooms. Makubwa House definitely made our stay in Lamu memorable.

Alexandra and Zion were just amazing. You can see the passion of Alexandra about Lamu and about this historical building! It is perfect for a big group, and it's also amazing to work from there. I liked everything of the place, so relaxing and such a relaxed atmosphere!

“Centrally located, pretty home in traditional Swahili style.”

The location is very central in Lamu Old Town. Close to the port so easy to get to when arriving from Manda airport and anywhere else you might be traveling in from. The property is open and spacious, very clean and Zion was very helpful in making sure we had everything we needed for our stay. The property is well equipped and each of the 3 rooms a good size. The pool was a nice option to cool off in. Le Dolce Toro is a great nearby coffee shop with outdoor space and Peponi Hotel was a lovely spot for lunch/dinner.

amazing Swahili house over 3 floors. comfortable for 5/6 people in 3 rooms with more beds in open areas. absolutely stunning place could have spent longer there. we organised for the chef to buy some groceries and cook us breakfast which worked really well.

Top balcony was the best. The breeze from the sea and the view was very nice.
