Very friendly staff, amazing food, especially the sukiyaki! Very flexible and accommodating to requests, bath made us feel very relaxed, lovely location. I would recommend anyone who wants a relaxing few nights to stay here.

“A wonderful traditional experience in a great location”

We had a great stay at Ryokan Motonago! It was wonderful to be able to experience a traditional stay and kaiseki meal in such a lovely setting, and in such a fantastic location. The food was delicious and different from all of the other meals we had while traveling in the country, which was a great experience. The ability to book private time in the onsen with my partner was also much appreciated, especially after a long day of walking and exploring the area (which was central!!). The bedding setup was very comfortable and the staff were lovely. Definitely a worthy experience!

Amazing experience at this traditional ryokan. Loved the ambience and the view from our room which overlooked the internal courtyard albeit from the first floor. The perfectly manicured tree formed a gorgeous silhouette outside our window. We stayed here as a treat on our last day of our Kyoto trip (5 days in total). Its location is tremendous if you’d like to see Kiyomizu-dera or the Yasaka shrine; both nearby. Hospitality was terrific despite the language hurdle. It was my wife’s first experience of a ryokan and a definite highlight.

The accommodations were cozy, with tatami mat flooring that added a touch of traditional Japanese comfort. Sleeping on the tatami mats was surprisingly comfortable, and I found myself truly embracing the essence of Japanese living. The room exuded warmth and simplicity, creating an atmosphere that felt like a home away from home. I highly recommend the 松園/Shoen, the one with the charming garden. The peaceful ambiance created a true escape from Having the opportunity to book both an evening and morning bath allowed me to fully unwind and soak in the tranquility of the ryokan. The bathing experience was exceptional, and the serene surroundings made it an absolute highlight of my stay. Although my visit coincided with the kitchen's holiday, I look forward to the opportunity to try out the traditional Kyoto cuisine on my next visit, they look amazing.

Great experience to the traditional Kyoto atmosphere , the host and service are very thoughtful and polite. Dinner and breakfast are fine Kyoto cuisine.Good ingredients and natural flavors. Environment is comfortable, clean and esthetic.

we love how central the Ryokan just sitting in the Gion town and close to all tourist temples yet quiet at same time. A great traditional japanese experience. The staff service is 12 out of 10. They went above and beyond. We had traditional japanese breakfast and had private onsen every night we stayed. Nice and relaxing.
