Overview
Just a 5-minute walk to Higashihongan-ji Temple and Gojo Subway Station, Matsubaya Ryokan has provided comfortable rooms to tired travellers since 1884. A cosy Japanese garden is located on site. JR Kyoto Train Station and Nishihongan-ji Temple are about 1 km from the hotel. Shosei-en Garden is only 300 metres away. Kiyomizu Temple is about a 10-minute taxi ride. The recently renovated rooms at Ryokan Matsubaya include a refrigerator, hairdryer and electric kettle. Most rooms are Japanese-style, featuring traditional futon bedding, tatami (woven straw) floors and yukata (Japanese-style robes). All rooms are non-smoking. Computers with free internet access are provided in the lobby. Baggage storage and a safe are available at the front desk.

“An authentic ryokan experience, that was clean, safe and welcoming.”
It was a nice simple traditional experience. Facilities were clean. The staff was very friendly and always made sure we were helped. Laundry amenities were clean and in working order. Washroom was modern and spacious. Felt safe walking around day and night. Air conditioning was available and in working order.

You really get a feeling of a traditional Japanese house in this Ryokan. We absolutely loved it! Even the tatami floor and sleeping on a floor Japanese way was pleasant. The room was really spacious and had a lovely small balcony facing the Japanese garden. The staff was very lovely and helpful.

if you find the right exit from kyoto station really 8 mins walk otherwise 15 mins:) close to nice restaurants, bus stations. cozy sweet old Japanese style rooms, intermediate quality of toilets, really nice helpful staff, intermediate western breakfast, for the price i surely would recommend.

The hotel is well located a 10min walk from Kyoto Station and right opposite the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. It is in a quiet residential road, but close enough to everything.

“Amazing Ryokan”
It was an excellent experience of a Japanese Ryokan. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The private bath was a really nice as well (needs booking ahead). They even gave us a small gift when we checked out.
