Comfortable and welcoming, a chance to experience a traditional Kyoto machiya, but with all modern comforts included. Seld-contained house but serviced as an inn, the best of both worlds. Great location, 2 stops from JR Kyoto, very central. Tucked away in a side alley, peaceful, quiet and safe neighbourhood. The staff were unfailingly pleasant, courteous and helpful. We enjoyed our stay, thank you!

We were warmly welcomed by lovely staff at Kyoisuke and enjoyed a traditional matcha tea ceremony. The property is exceptionally clean and well maintained. We loved the experience of staying in a 100 year old traditional Japanese home. We were a group of five and stayed in the Hokomachi property. My husband and I slept in two beds (not futons) low to the floor in one room and our three adult children slept on roll out futons in the adjoining room. All beds were located up a narrow staircase. Seating for meals is on tatami mats with zaisu chairs. Perhaps be mindful of this if you have anyone in your group with mobility issues. We would definitely recommend a stay at Kyoisuke.

The hosts were extremely attentive and gave us each a tour of the property even though some of us arrived at different times. The property was artfully renovated, with the outdoor baths being a wonderful feature. Communication before and after our stay was very good, and we felt well looked after.

Prime location 5-10 mins from ANY line that takes anywhere - 30-40 mins no matter where in Kyoto. Staff is AMAZING! All is clean and the service is spot on, also knew english very well. Always had answers and helped with luggage transportation. The house itself old but with modern interior with old vibes - amazing. Have washing machine which was very useful.

- Amazing location close to transport and good food. - Hokomachi was very authentic but also spacious for our family. Had three small kids and the setup was very accommodating. - Hosts were incredible and showcased the Japanese hospitality that keeps us coming back to the country. - Tea ceremony from Mia was a highlight and the Japanese breakfast was great.

The property was wonderful, an absolutely stunning building with so much history. It is in a great location which made it easy to get to the various places we were visiting and conveniently close to shops and food/restaurants. The hosts were so warm and welcoming and really friendly and helpful throughout our stay - an absolute highlight of our stay here.

Beautifully crafted and curated traditional house set in a quiet alley. A quiet sanctuary from bustling markets and crowds. The staff were outstanding. Nothing but good things to say about our stay here.

- Great location: Easy access to Nishiki Market, Gion and transport to get to temples and shrines. - The staff were incredibly friendly and hospitable, with the tea ceremony being a really nice way to welcome us to the accommodation. - The interior was beautiful and looked identical to the photos (although you will need to watch your head moving from room to room and going upstairs as ceilings and door frames are very low) - The beds were very comfortable and the facilities provided made for a very pleasant living experience. Only good things to say about our stay here!

We had a lovely stay at this ryokan. The hospitality was fantastic, and we enjoyed a tea ceremony where we even made the tea ourselves. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and very traditional. Highly recommended

“Kyoto hidden gem.”

The location, the property itself, the friendliness of the staff exceeded all expectations. This was the best stay during our two weeks trip to Japan. Upon arrival we were welcomed with a complimentary private tea ceremony, which was spectacular. During the ceremony we wore beautiful yukata, which were provided by the property management and which we could purchase at the end of our stay, which we did. Even though we stayed there during Kyoto Gion Matsuri Festival with thousands of people walking busy streets, we had our peace and quietness, as the property located in a quiet tiny almost private street adjacent to a big street with many little restaurants and shops. The property itself is located in about 10 min walk from the train/metro station. Whenever back to Kyoto, I'll stay there again.

My family and I truly enjoyed our stay at this charming traditional old Japanese duplex apartment. The authentic design gave us a wonderful cultural experience, and the apartment was thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. I especially appreciated how most of the gadgets and equipment were seamlessly integrated into the space, reflecting a perfect blend of tradition and modern convenience.
