The world's oldest hotel according to Guinness, Hoshi Ryokan was established in 718 and has been operated by 46 generations of the same family. It offers hot springs and traditional dishes. It is a 5-minute walk to Osshobe Park. Rooms at Hoshi have a tatami floor and Japanese-style futon bedding. The wide windows look out on peaceful greenery. All rooms have a TV, green tea and an en-suite bathroom with bath. Nata Temple is a 10-minute drive from the hotel. JR Kaga-Onsen Train Station is a 20-minute drive away and free shuttle is available by reservation only. Guests can relax with a massage, enjoy the sauna or sing karaoke. The hotel has a garden and a pottery gallery. A Japanese breakfast and traditional multi-course dinner are served in the dining room. Drinks and snacks are available at Japanese-style pub Irori and Garyo's Bar.

“Interesting stay of history, good onsen and good food:)”
Interesting ryokan with a garden complex and small shops internally. Its like kind of bringing back the past way of ryokan. I guess you pick this cause you like to experience old ways of how ryokan works. The walkways are pleasantly scented with light incense and the rooms are huge. The dinner on the first night is similar with others a little disappointing , but the second night dinner was fabulous. Onsen is great and clean with warm and cold soaks. Reception staffs are warm and helpful.

The garden, the onsen inside and outside was just a dream...the staff was super kind and helpfy. I forgot my backpack at shinkansen, the gentleman at the reception called the trainline for me and the following day l just got my bag back. Couldn't ask for more.

“A dreamy holiday in the 1300 year old Japanese onsen Ryokan”
It’s the traditional Japanese onsen Ryokan that we love. The 400 year old trees, the garden and the stones are all reminiscent of the onsen when it was first opened 1300 years ago.

“A delightful slice of traditional Japanese hospitality”
A lovely, relaxing slice of history. We were looked after really well. The staff are lovely and very happy to help us. We had a private onsen which was divine. We really enjoyed the break from the hustle and bustle of busier areas in Japan.

Staff were very courteous and helpful. Shuttle bus made access convenient. Very impressed with onsen facilities. The history associated with this accommodation is fascinating. Great value for money.

Room was great, we were surprised at the quality of the food on some nights, there was a lot to offer. The whole hotel has so much history is fascinating. The onsen baths were really good and when I went it was very quiet, much better than the busy ones in the cities. Would absolutely go back.

The onsen was amazing such a great experience. The room was huge and it was our first experience in a Japanese style hotel and it was great. The staff were really nice but it was difficult because we only spoke a very small amount of Japanese. if you eat fish, the traditional Japanese dinner was amazing!

This was the highlight of our 3.5 week trip! The entire place is beautiful , the staff are fantastic and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable, and the food was just amazing! Cannot recommend enough !
