“The best place I've ever stayed in Japan”

I would rate Seiryuso the best place I've ever stayed in Japan. I wanted to stay somewhere that felt like a traditional onsen ryokan but with good amenities, and which could cater to a semi-vegetarian (i.e. no meat and no fish, apart from dashi stock). I really couldn't have chosen better than Seiryuso - I loved everything about it. I was upgraded to a newly refurbished room that was extremely spacious, stylish, and had traditional fusuma window coverings that pulled back to reveal a gorgeous view of greenery. I slept with the fusuma open so I could wake up to the view. The onsen baths were so good. Seiryuso has an excellent system for two of its baths, where you choose your time slots at check-in, so you can have the bath all to yourself. Both baths were stunning. The outdoor rotemburo is right next to the river and you really feel like you're in the middle of nature. The indoor bath looks out onto the forests and hills of Kirishima, and it's just so relaxing to be gazing at maple trees and cherry blossom. (There is also a communal bath which I'll have to try next time!) The food was incredibly good. I was served a real kaiseki meal for both dinner and breakfast. (At my request it was vegetarian apart from dashi, but I think the standard option was a wagyu (beef) kaiseki meal.) Every dish was so creative, beautifully presented, and completely delicious. Although I don't know for sure how Seiryuso would respond if asked to provide a fully vegetarian or even vegan meal, I think it's definitely worth asking in advance. The setting is beautiful too - Maruo Waterfall is a short walk away. I was also delighted to come across a forest hiking path (丸尾自然探勝路登山口) where I saw two deer! Finally, the staff were incredibly kind, helpful, professional and caring, and went out of their way to make me feel at whole and to make my stay special and memorable. I will be raving about Seiryuso for a long time yet, and recommending it to everyone!

Staff were super helpful, going the extra mile to make my stay comfortable and always warm and friendly. While there were many staff who made an impression, would like to specially thank Hotel Manager Kajiki-san who was affable and took great care of us in every way, truly going above and beyond. I also enjoyed the variety of baths available. Most impressive was the outdoor bath next to a river! The onsen water was a lovely milky colour which goes to show how rich in minerals it was. I had a most relaxing and enjoyable time at the baths. Food was also exceptional. Well done Chef Yasuhiro! The dinners on both nights were so well composed and each dish brought delight. Really enjoyed my stay at Seiryuso and I’m looking forward to my next stay!

Everything was perfect. Staff was warm and hospitable. Rooms are clean and spacious. Onsen was fantastic. And food was amazing.

The customer service made me feel like a true VIP. I highly recommend a room with your own onset-bath in the balcony. I travelled alone, so I was a little lonely since the dinner and breakfast is served in traditional Japanese restaurant style with private booths. Maybe there could be an area where solo travelers could dine in company of other solo travelers if they wish.

The outdoor Onsen is very beautiful in the nature and the food is fabulous. Staffs are very friendly and helpful. Facilities are a bit old but kept well and very clean.

Location next to onsen waterfall, which you can listen to when you fall asleep Staff are friendly and welcoming. Suggested a beautiful hiking trail at Kirishima Gorge which was spectacular The Kaiseki dinner menu was amazing along with great Breakfast You would not stay any where else, this is the best location. Maruo Falls is 1km away I hat made the stay outstanding was the beautiful staff
