“Paranoid Popped-Collar Atmosphere - YOU are NOT A GUEST here - you are a FINANCIAL OBLIGATION”

- Room was in great condition, very clean down to detailed dusting. - Unique 'fermented rice powder' spa experience that was interesting. - The breakfast was delicious, and service from most of the staff was personal and they were attentive to detail. DID NOT LIKE: We canceled our 4 night 'deluxe suite' reservation a day early, at 3am. I am a non-Asian Japanese-speaking foreigner. They DID NOT speak English to me. So, imagine handling all of this in a second language: From the moment we walked in, I felt as though my wife and I were under suspicion and, rather than being 'attended to,' we were being monitored. I got the sense that the management did not want us there and were actively driving us out. It started... Perhaps when we walked in. I work from home and dress in sweat pants and a hoodie. I paid in cash for their nicest room late at night, dropped off by some colorful friends. Fine. We were not loud nor brash, though I realize we may not "suit" their normal patronage. Or perhaps it was because I'm white? It was hard to tell... Perhaps it started after check in... They asked specifically if we smoked or not, we told them yes. Despite the suite having a balcony, they did not want us to smoke there and told us in detail about the only available smoking spot and its distance from our room - that was fine. However, the smell of the small smoking balcony is above and next to their trash/compost, which reeks like a bunch of pickled pork and fish bones, aging in plastic barrels exposed to the sun and salty ocean air. A truly gag-worthy aroma that was heavy enough to follow us back into the hallway and stick in our nostrils. Yet, we smoked out there and it was good motivation for us to reduce our smoking, so thanks for that Kamakura Park! My wife (Japanese) suspected they were watching/checking to make sure we were using the ashtray out there... it seemed they were quite strict about their anti-smoking policy...
