Overview
This fascinating new hotel is a converted prison, offering both cell-style and conventional rooms. It is located near the Japanese Garden in the centre of Kaiserslautern, at the edge of the Pfälzer Wald forest. Dating from 1867, the Alcatraz Hotel am Japanischen Garten is Germany’s first prison-hotel. In the cell-style rooms, guests can taste a little bit of prison life via barred windows, original prison beds (made by prison inmates), and even a washbasin and toilet in the room. Breakfast can be served through the hatch of the original prison door if you wish. A new à la carte restaurant opened in 2013. However, the cell-rooms of the Alcatraz Hotel are not without modern comforts, and each includes free wireless internet access. Those who prefer more conventional comforts may prefer the hotel rooms or suites. These feature an en suite bathroom. The Hinter Gittern (Behind Bars) bar is ideal for rounding off a busy day with a few drinks before escaping to your quiet cell or room.

It's particular. Different from every other hotel I've been in. If you're looking for an original experience, you will appreciate this hotel. Staff was very friendly. Private parking available. Quiet and clean room. Good position practically in the city center. Rich breakfast.

Good location near town centre, interesting prison experience. Room is functional but had everything needed. Breakfast was reasonable and offered some good options. There seemed to be very few other guests so it was quiet.

“Overall, it was a pleasant stay for my work trip to the area. Location was convenient!”
The hotel is really cool and I like how they kept some of the old prison features. I had a small room which was perfect for my short stay. The room provided everything I needed and I appreciated the breakfast. Parking was easy, too.

Sleeping in a cell was truly an experience! Beds are compact but comfy. For a single night taking a shower in a spacious shared bathroom was actually fine. Parking on site really convenient, as well as the location at walking distance from the city centre.

“Good spot if you need a bed are flexible and have a sense of humor.”
Very Clean, Bed was surprisingly comfortable though I never had such a HARD pillow (stiff foam rubber) in my life.. kept me awake. Room was simple but exactly as respresented on the website, thus nothing one could "complain" about.
