This time-honoured hotel is situated in one of the oldest half-timber buildings of Ilsenburg, a visitor magnet and cultural centre for more than 1000 years. Altstadthotel Ilsenburg has a Finnish sauna and infrared sauna. Altstadthotel Ilsenburg is a comfortable base for exploring the Harz region and its surprisingly varied landscapes. Among the many local attractions, you will be charmed by the romantic Ilsetal valley and Heinrich Heine hiking route. The rooms in the main building are located between the 1st and 3rd floor, while the rooms in the annex are at ground level. The staff were fantastic and always made me feel welcome, especially Lena. The location is easy access to the train station and the centre of town. It is not as close to the start of most hikes as others, but I didn't mind, it just added an extra km or 2 if walking, but buses are available and the hotel provides a city pass which gives you free or discounted travel. The rooms were good and had all the basic necessities, comfy beds, good pillows and a good shower with body/hair wash, but the room I booked didn't have a fridge or kettle, etc. My double room was two singles put together which was fine just for me, but the gap in the middle would have been annoying for a couple so you might need to check that your room has an actual double bed. The breakfast was also decent, but better to go earlier to get the fresher eggs. I had dinner there twice and enjoyed the food and being able to eat outside in the biergarten. There are fancier places to stay in this town, but the town itself is so beautiful you will want to spend most of your time outside, so for a comfy bed and proximity to the train station, this is a great option.
