Friendly and helpful staff

Hammerstein Lodge is an okay option if you do not want to spend too much money staying directly inside the park or very close to Deadvlei/Sossusvlei. The area itself is beautiful and the location works well as a stopover for exploring the region. However, unfortunately there were several things during our stay that were disappointing and made the lodge not really worth the price for us. We booked a double room, but when we arrived the beds were separated twin beds. When we asked about it, the staff simply told us to push the beds together ourselves. That is definitely not the level of hospitality you would expect from a lodge in this price range. Another major issue was the air conditioning, which was not working during our entire stay. During the day the room became extremely hot, while at night it got very cold. We informed reception already on the first night, but even after three days the issue was never fixed and there was very little effort or communication about it. We even had to ask for extra blankets ourselves. We stayed in one of the older rooms, which would have been acceptable, but the lodge was completely packed with very large tour groups from Germany, the Netherlands, France, China, and Russia. The atmosphere therefore felt very crowded and noisy, especially during dinner and breakfast times. The buffet food itself was okay, but because of the huge groups it constantly felt rushed — long lines, waiting for trays to be refilled, and many people running around. It did not feel relaxing at all. There is also a nice viewpoint nearby for sunset, but guests are not allowed to walk there independently. Instead, you are required to book an expensive guided drive to access it. Considering the lodge is located in the middle of nowhere, it would have been nice to at least allow guests to hike there for a smaller fee or provide a simple accessible viewpoint. Overall, the biggest disappointment was the attitude of some of the staff at reception.

Location was good! About 1h - 1.5h to Sossusvlei, which was okay for us. Game drive was really nice and at a good price! Staff was very helpful to arrange this and even offered a unique private experience! Room was clean.

The staff were great. LJ who is the resident mechanic was outstanding and repaired our broken bonnet hinges in no time and done well. He certainly is an asset to the lodge ad he must have to repair many guests vehicles due to the extremely corrugated gravel roads in that area.

We received a lovely welcome after an arduous drive to get to Hammerstein. The room was good as were the dining and bar areas. The staff were really attentive. All in all a splendid place to stay.

The staff were attentive and hospitable. Breakfast and dinner were delicious, offering a good variety of foods. The room and bathroom were clean and spacious, and the air conditioner was highly effective for escaping the desert heat. The mosquito nets over the beds were a thoughtful and appreciated touch.
