Very quiet hotel. Loved the separate/private dining rooms - we tried many new foods. Staff were helpful. Rooms clean and calming. Great way of using an onsen privately on the balcony overlooking greenery. Great location for the Hakone loop. Tatami mats everywhere make the place very special.

Private onsen on the balcony and the food

The hotel has a very beautiful design and decoration, with a pleasant atmosphere and relaxing music. The overall ambience feels special and fits well with the ryokan/onsen concept. The staff were very friendly, polite, and welcoming. The room with the private onsen was very nice, comfortable, clean, and relaxing. The private onsen itself was beautiful and enjoyable, although the water was quite hot, probably around 40°C or more, so this may depend on personal preference. The staff advised us not to stay in the onsen for too long, ideally around 30 minutes, then take a break, and not use it too many times per day to avoid headaches. The food was not served in the room, but in a private dining room on the third floor. The atmosphere there was very beautiful and relaxing. The small dishes were presented very nicely, looked excellent, and tasted very good. The service during the meal was polite and professional. However, the dinner service felt too rushed. Dinner is served exactly at the agreed time, either 6:00 PM or 6:30 PM. When you arrive, the food is already on the table, and the next courses are served very quickly one after another. In my opinion, there was not enough time to properly enjoy the first course before the next dishes arrived. This made the experience feel a little rushed and less relaxing than expected. We were also disappointed by the very strict check-in and check-out policy. Check-in starts exactly at 3:00 PM, and check-out is already at 10:00 AM. In my opinion, a 10:00 AM check-out is not in line with international standards and does not really fit a 4-star hotel. In addition, every extra hour in the room costs 3,500 yen, which I personally find rather expensive and not appropriate for a hotel of this category. Overall, the hotel is beautiful, the atmosphere is very relaxing, the staff are excellent, the food is delicious, and the private onsen is a great experience.

“Amazing experience, beautiful facilities and delicious food”

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Hakone Airu! We only stayed for 1 night and we wish we stayed longer! The check in process was easy, and the host showed us to our room and then gave us a tour of the whole building which was really helpful. Our room was beautiful! Our favourite bit was the private onsen on our balcony - it felt like something out of a dream! The complimentary meal was such an amazing and interesting experience. Several courses of beautifully presented food, some of which we had never tried before! The servers were so friendly and attentive throughout. While we had dinner, the staff made up our beds - the best and most comfortable sleep we had over our 2 week trip in Japan! We would 1000000% stay at Hakone Airu again. Amazing from start to finish. Thank you so much!

We booked a room on the 4th floor with a mountain view and were very happy with it! The private onsen was excellent. Two adults can comfortably fit inside, and the water temperature was perfect. The room had all necessary toiletries, including creams and cotton swabs. In the room, you can change into yukatas and wear them to breakfast and dinner. Nightwear was also provided. After check-in, the main room is used as a living area. When you go for dinner, the staff lays out futons, turning the living room into a bedroom. There is a small kitchenette with a kettle and refrigerator. We didn’t immediately figure out the ventilation/heating system (it was quite noisy at night), but it can be turned off. The hotel is a shoe-free property. We left our shoes at the reception, and the staff brought them back to us when needed. We also left our luggage with the staff before check-in, and it was delivered to our room upon arrival. Dinner was very unusual and traditional, with many courses. Guests are seated in private dining rooms, where dishes are brought one by one. We had to experiment a bit, as we weren’t sure how to eat some of the dishes :) Breakfast time and menu could be chosen; we went with the “Western” option and were satisfied. Hakone-Yumoto Railway station is about a 12-minute walk away. There are also many cafés and shops nearby.

Amazing stay, the facilities were excellent. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. We really got to experience the Japanese culture.

A beautiful stay at Hakone Airu, the design and theme was extremely tasteful, check-in was so smooth and prompt. I would advise anyone visiting Japan to stay in a Ryokkan for at least one night, and this one was perfect. The rooms were clean and featured minimalistic designs with warm lighting - the futons were surprisingly comfortable and probably the best night sleep we had during our trip to Japan! The highlight was the private onsen - with the absolutely stunning views of the cherry blossoms and mountains, this was the perfect place to unwind and we really felt the benefit of it.
