Overview
Situated in the Gero hot-spring district and with a history of over 180 years, Yamagataya offers Japanese and Western-style accommodations with river views. Guests can relax in the indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths and use free Wi-Fi at the public areas. A free shuttle is available from JR Gero Train Station, which is a 5-minute drive away and must be reserved at time of booking. The air-conditioned rooms feature a flat-screen TV, a fridge and a safety deposit box. Guests can choose to stay in rooms with tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding or in rooms with Western beds. Japanese Yukata robes are provided for all guests and rooms come with an en suite bathroom. Massages can be requested for an extra cost and you can enjoy a game of table tennis. Local products can be purchased at the souvenir shop and luggage storage is offered at the front desk. Complimentary green tea is available. Traditional multi-course meals are served for dinner and a Japanese set menu for breakfast. All meals are served at the dining room. Yamagataya Ryokan is a 5-minute walk from Gero Museum and a 15-minute walk from Gero Onsen Gassho Village.

Incredible location, room was very clean, it was very spacious and the bed was huge (very comfortable for 2 people). There were no issues checking out very early.

“Gero Onsen hotel with a view of the river”
Locationnis good, close to the gero train station and walking distance to all places. Breakfast and dinner was a half board package bought and mediocre Japanese cuisine. Bus shuttle service provided back and forth from hotel to gero station. The establishment is dated but acceptable for 1-2 nights. The onsen was great.

The meals are great and filling. As someone who doesn't eat much and prefers the subtle taste of traditional Japanese cuisine this hit all the right spots. I always looked forward to having the dinner every night. The breakfast is good but not exactly superb. The staff were extremely polite and professional. I'm not sure if they spoke English, but at least one person there spoke mandarin Chinese. Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to see what the shared baths were like but the private Onsen was decent, if not slightly expensive. The cheaper 2200 yen options are extremely popular and booked out completely, so I had to settle for a 5000 yen option. You get a private changing booth with a make up table and mirror, a hair dryer,a shower and your own temperature adjustable hot tub. Location of the ryokan is decent but there is a bit of a hike to the station, mini bus shuttles do exist but not sure of the frequency.

Room is newly renovated, very clean and tidy. Staffs are nice and communicable in English. We've added a private open-air onsen use for 45 minutes and that is the best 2200yen we've spent.

The dinner was very good and tasty, and we enjoyed it a lot. They have a wide variety of private onsens, both indoor and outdoor. We took the outdoors and enjoyed it a lot. Also, the public onsen is very spacious and offers many amenities. They have a shuttle bus from the station to the station, and the Riyokan is close to the city center. We really enjoyed our stay.

“A lovely stay at this 180-year-old historic hotel”
Yamagataya is a historic hotel with over 180 years of history. The property consists of multiple buildings, which can be a bit confusing to navigate at first, but the staff were extremely dedicated in explaining everything. Even though they had limited English, they did their very best to help. The room I booked had a toilet but no shower. I actually saw this as a positive thing—a 'good excuse' to force myself to use the Onsen, which was the main purpose of my visit anyway! There is also a souvenir shop on-site. I highly recommend booking the plan with meals (breakfast and dinner). The dinner set, in particular, features Hida Beef Shabu-Shabu, which is an absolute must-try!

“Amazing experience with ryokan meal and private onsen”
The room was huge, with a very comfortable bed, coffeemaker and teapot, an amazing view of the mountains and the river, and the private onsen was a really top feature. We booked the ryokan dinner and breakfast, and the experience was amazing. We had a private dinner, kindly prepared and served, with so many interesting dishes of very good quality, umeshu, Hida beef and many other preparations. Breakfast was in a common room, but it was also amazing, with salmon, mushrooms of different types, rice, miso soup and other tasty dishes. Staff was extremely nice and attentive. Regarding location, it is just 15 minutes away from the train station, but a shuttle service was also available.
