“Real, charming, comfortable and connected”

It is in a village by the canal with people simply getting on with their lives. The family who own the villa built it themselves and funds made go to educating their children. The owner took us about in his tuk tuk and organised for us to birdwatch. It's close to Galle and its heritage tourist vibe.

It is the most stunning location. On the edge of Kepu Ela. The birds are stunning. Everything is beautifully clean. Ruka is an outstanding host. We were welcomed with a fresh glass of wood mango from his tree overhanging the waterway. The food is prepared by Ruka’s wife Ayesha and is absolutely delicious. We had supper there both nights. Breakfasts were superb too. Ruka and Ayesha have real style. We went on a fabulous boat safari with Nalaka our first morning. A perfect place to be based to visit Galle and the surrounding area. 💕

“Birdsong, beauty and the best service”

From the moment we arrived, we knew we had found a fabulous place to stay for a few days. Ruka - the owner - was so welcoming: we arrived earlier than check in time, but that wasn’t a problem, he simply made us some coffee and settled us at the beautiful breakfast area overlooking the river. We are all keen on wildlife and this was a perfect spot ….. loads of birds, monkeys, water monitors ….. all from the comfort of our own private viewing platform. Ruka organised a fantastic boat safari (picked up from the garden), acted as private TukTuk transport into town, arranged our onward journey and made us feel more like family than guests. If you are looking for a peaceful, magical, simple place full of birdsong and beauty, but still only minutes from the bustle of Galle Fort, then this is the place for you.

The setting of the property by the river was amazing. Kupa was very attentive, arranged excellent boat safari and took us out on the tuk tuk. The property is close enough to walk to the beach and a short journey from Galle Fort.

The location on the river is just lovely (apart from the mosquitoes 🤪). Our host was very accommodating and helpful. In a quiet suburb with Galle fort a short tuk tuk drive away.

“Don’t miss to stay in Sri Lankan village!”

What a calm relaxing place! I think it was my best stay in Sri Lanka. I’m happy I stayed in Villa Bird Gate and not somewhere in Galle. Next to this place there is nice beach club Taavetti. It is also possible to go to Galle as owner of Bird Gate has its own tuk-tuk. He was very kind to give me a lift to Galle and then pick me up. Breakfast is amazing and different every day. Portions are big so I even asked to reduce them for me :)

“Fantastic local stay near Galle”

The owner and his family are delightful. They make you very welcome and nothing is too much trouble. The terrace overlooking the river is great with an abundance of wildlife on view. We went on a river safari from the property with the owners friend. The food is also great. Three different breakfasts and we also had dinner one night which his wife cooked. The room is comfortable but we found the A/C and fan a bit noisy, so slept in rather warm conditions with them both off.

We loved our stay at Villa Bird Gate! It’s a beautiful little space, like a hidden paradise. The room was clean and had everything we needed. Also mosquito nets around the bed, which was very helpful! It’s designed modern and pretty. The garden is really lovely, you can sit right next to the river/lagoon and listen to the nature sounds. A lot of times there was a peacock sitting in a palm tree right over our heads :D The owner is so nice and will help you if you need anything! He even took us with his own tuktuk! :) The breakfast was amazing as well, we got a juice, tea, some eggs of different kinds, a fresh and delicious fruit plate and some more delicious things I can’t name! :) You can walk to the “main road” in about 3-5 minutes, the location of the stay is really calm and close to nature.

Not only the hospitality of our hosts was absolutely outstanding but also the love they put into the detail of their property is amazing which is right next to the channel. You can see various kinds of wildlife while having a varying delicious breakfast and if you want the hosts are organising a safari tour up the river, which we can highly recommend!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Bird Gate. It's peacefully situated on a river, where you can also enjoy a beautiful boat safari. The owner has created a beautiful place here, a little paradise. They serve a delicious breakfast, and we had a lovely, spacious room. The host is very friendly and helpful and took us everywhere in his tuk-tuk. I highly recommend this place.

“One of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka”

This was one of the best places I’ve ever stayed at in Sri Lanka - I would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay in Galle. The place is a small two storey unit with spacious, clean rooms and run by a local family. It is right by the Gin River so you will see plenty of wildlife - it’s one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka. The family who own it were so warm and hospitable and went over and beyond to make my stay comfortable it felt like I had come to stay with my family. The aunty made breakfast every morning and her cooking was delicious, the uncle also had a tuktuk and was kind enough to drop me off if I needed to go to the town or other places. I had come for a wedding so he even dropped me off at the venue multiple times which I really appreciated. The place is in the middle of Siyambalagahawatta which is a small village - everyone is very friendly and it feels tucked away and quiet even though you are not far from the main road and the beach. If you want to experience true Lankan hospitality and support the locals I recommend you stay here.

The location is incredible. With bird watching, monkeys and water monitors every day. The hosts are amazing at communicating promptly and any questions or issues we had were immediately responded to. They even brought us up cups of tea during a thunder storm.

The property is a beautiful quiet house set back from the main road and a few kilometres away from the bustle of Galle in a lovely community. The breakfast was exceptional, and the family were so helpful and accommodating, driving me to places I needed to go and giving me recommendations and advice. The laundry service was also excellent, quick and clean.

“Superb, quiet, beautiful place to stay in Galle, with top-host”

Villa Bird Gate is located in a residential area in Galle. After driving through some narrow streets, you end up at this wonderful place. The property has a lovely garden, with seats next to the river with an excellent view. You can see all sorts of birds, water monitors, monkeys and bats in the evening from this terrace. The owner is very friendly and has taken us on a tour in his tuktuk to see some highlights in the surroundings. The homemade Sri Lankan breakfast was one of the best we have had this holiday. We absolutely loved our stay here.

Amazing stay in a location which was so peaceful, yet less than a kilometre from the main road / beach. Ruka the host and his family were everything I expected after reading previous reviews and nothing was too much trouble…. It was like having a personal tour guide (with tuk-tuk) to show me the sights. Everything spotlessly clean, breakfasts amazing, wildlife bountiful and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
