Overview
The Tamandua Ecotourism complex is made up of a Biological Station located 5 km from the beach, very close to the border with the Corcovado National Park, as well as 3 apartments and a large house located 1.5 km from Drake Bay beach. The Biological Station boungalows are simple but very cozy, with a private bathroom or shared bathroom. There is also a large living room with kitchen, outdoor gardens, forest trails and natural pools. To get here there are 6 river crossings and therefore, if you arrive by your own car it must be a 4x4 and tall. We have research projects on our tropical forest property of 20 hectares. We offer restaurant service in this place. The apartments have one room for 4 people, a fully equipped kitchen, a living room and a balcony where you can enjoy the tropical forest, as well as private parking. They are very close to town, we do not have restaurant service here. The house has 2 rooms with capacity for up to 6 people, a fully equipped kitchen, a living room with TV, a balcony with views of the forest and parking. The house is very close to town, we do not have restaurant service here.

Staying here was one of our highlights in Costa Rica. This is quite remote place in the middle of the forest so you can't expect too many amenities but that's part of the experience. To get here you have to cross the river multiple times, preferably by 4x4 taxi. We've seen tucans, falcons, tamandua and other animals. Alan who welcomed us here is a great guide and knows everything about jungle. He also prepared delicious meals for us. We even had a chance to meet Rebeca who is the owner of the station and biologist. She explained us a lot about her research projects, wildlife and local environment. This place is great for the nature lovers.

“Lovely terrace, good size apartment (but dated). Close to nature. Helpful and proactive host.”
Location is great for a nature experience. Very quite, and on the edge of Drakes Bay village. Wonderfuly large terrace facing the jungle. Lots of animal sightings, with nice wooden chairs to eat from. The apartment is a good size. The bedroom fan was very comfortable. Richard was exceptionally friendly , helpful, proactive and gave time in the planning, Booking and information aspects. Kendal was also helpful during our stay with providing information Richard gave us a small discount for multiple nights booking. Kind.

We were in Costa Rica for three weeks and this was our favorite spot by far! Rebecca and her team are lovely, very attentive. The local cook, Tati, was just the sweetest and she prepared every meal with such care. I am intolerant to gluten and she was able to come up with lovely recipes to accommodate my needs. But the best part is the reserve itself. It is very remote (Bahia Drake is itself quite remote, and the reserve is about 20 minutes away from town by car). The kind of place you go to to completely disconnect from the outisde world, to reconnect with nature and with yourself. Aside from the beautiful proprety where you can chill in hamacs and swim in the river, there is a beautiful trail that leads to a waterfall and swimming hole. That is where we spent our afternoons, completely alone because no tourists venture there apart from Rebecca's guests. Rebecca is a biologist and she is very knowledgeable of the local animals, insects and plants. She cares deeply about her reserve and about wildlife preservation in Costa Rica. We had a couple of tours planned during our 5 night stay and I wished we hadn't because all I wanted to do was stay at Tamandua!! There are 7 rivers to cross to get there. We had rented a small 4X4 and had no problem getting through. I was quite worried about the river crossings and Rebecca was kind enough to meet us in town to guide us through.

It was great place to see nature without too many people. Hosts were really nice, helpful and talkative. They prepared great breakfast 😋 Around their place you can find great beaches and jungle. I can recommend night trip to the rainforest.

Richard is a very good host. He contacted me directly after my reservation and explained exactly how to get to Darke Bay. He also organized a colectivo and boat. Getting to Darke bay was therefore extremely easy. The apartments are very nice and quiet but still within walking distance of the village. They are ideal for 2 to 4 people. Richard also organized everything very quickly for the departure. Everything went very smoothly.

“Not a Magical stay as I hope it would be”
The host is very helpful and knowledgeable guide and biologist and her tour at the lodge walking around her property was great. Chef is great. Taxi USD30 per trip is 20 minutes and the 4X4 will drive you from drake bay beach or town to the lodge. It is usd 30 each way. The 6 river crossings are fun and highlight of the trip. Once inside the lodge, there is nothing to do except the tour you pay for and take with them- which is a short trail you can walk around, soak in river, and a night tour. You only need 1 day to do it all, then you are stuck. We booked 3 nights and left after 2 nights. I got sick with high fever and at night after dinner, all staff left the property, and you are alone in the forest by yourself. It is not a comfortable stay. And you don’t get to do or see enough to make it worth it. What you are paying is room fees per day usd 85+(3 meals) 40 + 45 trail tour +35 night tour +60 (taxi come and go). There are not enough tours or things to do or see to occupy your time. You can’t get out once you get in. Each trip will cost you usd30. The lodge is beautiful but your room is not comfy. Similar situation with the apartment in town. USD6 per taxi ride up and down if you want to go to the beach or go in town to dine. Better stay close to town or beach for easier access because both the apt and the lodge are not worth your while for the unnecessary traveling. There are places that are really magical that worth all the efforts and traveling but do not mistaken this is one of them like I did when I saw the 9.9 booking.com rating. This is not one of it, although the host does strive to make it work but is not quite there yet.

“a magical place in the middle of the forest”
a place located deep in the forest, away from tourists. you can count on contemplation among nature. the property has its own amazing trails in the forest with a waterfall and a natural swimming pool. the owners offer night and morning trips to the jungle. have biological and botanical knowledge about the forest. a magical place to which the road leads, which is an adventure in itself.

Incredible spot in the rainforest to experience nature. Trails straight from the station into the forest and a river for swimming right next to the garden. We saw monkeys, snakes, frogs, lizards, tons of birds. Rebeca is an amazing host, organised our transport and Sirena tour, and took us on great tours at the station. Alan is an excellent cook!

This is an amazing, magical place in the middle of rain forrest :) that is absolutely perfect for a relaxing time in the heart of nature itself, quiet and beatiful. We recommend a walk around the station. Rebeca is the best hostess you can ask for. She helped us a lot with transportation and trips. We had lovely stay in her place and we definetly recommend it!

“Rustic accomadations in a beautiful setting.”
We went to Costa Rica to hike and watch birds. Tamandua has beautiful trails that follow a river so the property and location was perfect. The cabin was very clean and our balcony had a great view of the garden and forest. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony after hiking the trails and one afternoon saw a Tayra run through the garden. We stayed 3 nights which was a perfect amount of time to explore the property. The food was delicious. Rebecca arranged our taxi to and from the lodge which was appreciated.

A magic place. Cottages located in the middle of the rainforest.Tamandua Station is not a five star hotel, but staying there is a wonderful and unforgettable experience. You can cut yourself off from civilization and feel the real nature around you. Rebecca is a wonderful host. She helped arrange transportation from Sierpe to Drake Bay and a taxi to Tamandua. We had a night walk around the neighborhood with her, and the next day she helped us find a trip to Corcovado National Park. You can eat there meals prepared by Alan, they are delicious.

“amazing local experience in the jungle with a perfect host!”
due to the rain saison we could not stay at Tamandua but at Rebecas apartment. this was very nice, well equipment and clean. we had a lovely balcony with a jungle view! a lovely walk of 15’ to the village. Rebeca is a perfect host, she helped us with everything; our Corcovado tour, a day at the beach and a lovely day at her biological station including lunch.
