The best shojin ryori food I’ve ever had !

The best shojin ryori dinner I’ve ever had - a vegetarian kaiseki The traditional rooms with a warm futon and beautifully decorated - and with actual tea leaves in the tea set (unlike most hotels that give out tasteless tea bags, these leaves had a nice fragrance ) The attentive and welcoming family of owners. They have good English but let me try with my bad Japanese The hot spring bath that felt even better after climbing Mount Daisen The possibility to have a bento of onigiri (rice balls), very useful since all the shops were still closed when I set out for the hike around 8:30

Tranquil oasis in the middle of the woodland

Absolutely loved this place - our room on the second floor looked out onto the trees and up to Mount Daisen, and from the seating area we felt immersed in the woods. The hosts felt very welcoming and calm and it was the most peaceful experience. The vegan food was out of this world and we started each day with a zen meditation with one of the monks. Would definitely recommend to stay at this ryokan to find some stillness and comfort. Would rate at 11 if I could.

Monastery in the mountains

Staying in a monastery in the mountains and in the middle of a forest even for just one night is a great experience. The room is comfortable and spacious, the services (toilet and bathroom) are external but comfortable. The kindness of the monks is incredible as well as the vegan dinner and breakfast with mountain products. I recommend it to everyone, it is a place of peace

The stay, onsen and everything else was great. Breakfast and dinner are delicious, hosts are very friendly and nice. On my checkout day, it was snowing quite heavily which caught me by surprise. Was worried about how to get to the bus stop with my luggage since the snow above-ankle deep. They were nice and offered to drive me down to the station which I greatly appreciate.

Excellent traditional Japanese stay.

Half board option is a must, everything was delicious and prepared with such attention to detail. We chose this accommodation for our Daisen white snowboarding trip and the location was perfect. It’s about 10-15 min on foot to the mountain and since there was no available parking at the mountain every morning we drove there due to crowds this worked out perfectly for us.

Seek your inner peace with your stay

Humble guest house with exceedingly good service staff. Quiet room facing the temple and experienced short stint of snow. The vegetarian halfboard meals (where the main ingredients were grown locally in the vicinity) were excellent. Good indoor onsen too. A great getaway for peaceful personal time

Not cheap but worth the experience

Loved the Shojin Ryori for dinner and breakfast. The portion was huge and the statt explained some of the dishes and how to eat them for the full experience. They were also helpful in looking up bus schedules when we were not sure about the local public transport.

We enjoyed the shojin(vegan) food very much with the use of seasonal vegetables/mushrooms and I think that to me made up a big part of value for money, and the Zazen Meditation experience in the morning and the Monks sermon was a great way to start the morning in Daisen. However, you need to be proficient/fluent in Japanese in order to understand the sermon of the Monk. The breakfast too was wonderful. The view from the room of Daisen was wonderful, and the rooms are traditional, but my favourite part of it was that they had old wooden windowframes preserved which you do not see much nowadays, and was nice to sleep in the futons. I am definitely planning to make another trip in the future.
