“Charming house full of character”

Once you know what you are going for, this is a wonderful and different house. It is a 1000 years old and you must appreciate that whilst hard efforts were made to integrate modern amenities, some things are not possible. Access is difficult with steep rough stairs and is especially difficult for the toilet. But once you know that, and you should if you read the reviews, you can appreciate the house itself. It oozes charm and character. The bed, despite negative reviews we found very comfortable. I'm not sure if it has been changed. Facilities are all within a stone's throw away. The grocer across the road, the church, the butcher, cafeterias and bars and restaurants are all literally within 100 to 200 metres.

“Magical cave in a magical village”

The location is beautiful and the internal atmosphere is incredible. Staying in a rock is amazing and the host was very responsive and informative. It truly felt like a special experience.

“Unique and lovely place”

Location was perfect, we walked round the village and if I could pick anywhere to stay it would have been here. It was close to all shops, bars, ticket office for Volo dell'Angelo (flight of the Angel zipwire). If you are an individual traveller, couple, or 2 or 3 people this is ideal, kitchen has everything you need, tv, small balcony, unique and lovely stay. The steps into the property and to the bathroom are stone and steep but manageable providing you can climb stairs unassisted. I'm 5ft 9 (size 18-20), my partner is 6ft 4 both 94kg and managed, but I think anyone larger than me may struggle when showering.

“Quirky and unique”

If you love characterful, old properties then this place may be for you. It feels like a museum, furnished with very ecclectic taste. It was a great place to stay for 2 nights but I probably wouldn't have wanted to stay much longer. In general it needs a bit of TLC and some of the furniture needs replaced. The mattress was uncomfortable for 2 people and a new one is needed asap as you roll into the middle, making it difficult to get a good sleep. The toilet and shower were not an issue for us and the good water pressure made up for the small space. Not the easiest stair to navigate during the night though. Quite a few of the sockets were not working so the lighting wasn"t great. All of that said, it was a unique experience that we will not forget and I was very glad to stay there. It's location is perfect and it's very near the ticket office for the zip slide and the local bars and shops.

“A "cave house" is a very unique stay and there will always be limitations with an ancient property.”

We knew when we booked that we were choosing to stay in a very unique property and as such there will always be limitations. Your bathroom is in the same building but you go out of your own front door and up a few steep stone steps - it was fine for us and nobody else has access to your bathroom but if you need to go to the bathroom during the night it could be tricky. The shower is very tiny but its the best the owners can fit into the space and it worked well. The location of the property is exceptional. We are glad we stay here and would recommend it, just be aware that you are booking a very special, ancient property. We stayed for 2 nights and it was the right decision to have this time to explore the area and the sun setting over the square and the valley in Castelmezzano was magical. A lot of people stop here as a day trip - I think they are missing out - try to stay a little longer.
