It's in a historic site and well kept, on the sea, and the rooms are simple but with comfortable beds, good ventilation and lighting. And spotlessly clean. There is great attention to detail, also in the breakfast rooms. There were basics, like some tea, salt, etc in the kitchen.

“One of the most impressive stays we’ve ever experienced, and in an authentic prison building”

Room was small but cozy, beds comfortable. We had a large window and two connected single beds. Although there was not much space to walk around, we had everything we needed and shared showers offered a good stream of warm water after an exhausting day. Super friendly reception staff, easy check in. We did not choose breakfast but ate in nearby bakeries instead. Genuinely beautiful sunset from above the rocky walls just outside of the building. The hotel used to be a prison with some interesting historical facts features on the walls of the hall and room. Very much recommend!

“Great for single travelers”

Good budget alternative for a single traveler like me. Shared facilities were fine. Room was adequate for a night or two and I didn’t find it stuffy even though the window wasn’t reachable. The people I had contact with at the reception were helpful and polite.

In the grounds of an historic fortress ! Very well kept, great condition! Very central for exploring. Lovely airy rooms, shared toilet & showers - but really lovely ones ! Great breakfast Friendly & helpful.

Location and vibe

“Yummy breakfast, friendly and helpful staff in a historic location!”

The staff were very accomodating, friendly and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast spread was the best of our 5 week holiday with lots of different options (including GF and vegan). The view from our room was very nice, it was special being inside the fortress, which is one of the highlights of the town.

“Gorgeous stay!”

Gorgeous location, really nice to stay in the fortress in general and sleeping in a prison is quite exceptional, we really enjoyed it. It is very quiet in the nights. It is walking distance to the lovely city centre. Staff was very helpful to offer us a place for our bicycles.

Amazing accommodation in a beautiful location. Extremely nice people. Exceptional (in a good way) interior (earplugs advised as it echoes in the prison building).

A cozy and intimate atmosphere in historic surroundings. Good quality breakfast and it is nice to have access to a refrigerator and freezer in the common area. The staff is nice and do their best to make us feel welcome. The whole area of the Varberg fortress is just amazing and well worth a visit. The museum at the peak is great, even for kids!

A very unique experience. Renovated in a way that keeps the interesting prison aspect while still being comfortable and modern. The location is also great

“Varberg Fortress is a great place to stay”

Our room was comfortable, and the view from our window over the bay was nice, even though shrubbery partially blocked our view of the beautiful Kallbadhus building. Breakfast was delicious (cereals, yoghurt, fresh rolls, cheese, salad vegetables). The only cooked items were boiled eggs. Staff were friendly and helpful. The location in the fortress is great and walking around, there are wonderful views over the bay, as you are up so high. The museum is nearby (12-4pm), and free entry during Autumn and Spring is included with your stay (need to show proof). The Bocksten Man exhibition is excellent with information displayed in Swedish and English. The other exhibitions are in Swedish, and my phone wasn't working so couldn't access the app with English translations. Delicious food at the Museum cafe.
