Overview
Housed in a former monastery from the Middle Ages, this historic hotel is located on Lake Vättern in quaint Vadstena. Guests can relax with in the peaceful settings or at the on-site spa. It features free WiFi and an on-site restaurant. Vadstena Klosterhotell’s classically decorated guest rooms feature cable TV and a separate seating area. Some are located in the monastery building, while others are in a grand 19th-century building. The spa can be accessed for a surcharge and includes hot baths, a sauna, a steam bath and a variety of spa and massage treatments. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor hot tub, a cafe/bar, a relaxation room and a gym. Guests can rent bicycles to explore the neighbouring Vadstena Castle and the town’s idyllic main street. Vadstena Golf Club is 10 minutes’ drive away. Motala Train Station, 17 km away, is the closest stop to the hotel.

Impressive with nature and Middle Ages at your doorstep. The location is superb and the town a must to walk. The castle is around the corner but the convent with the church is the most stunning.

“Historic hotel in various locations across town, comfortable rooms and excellent breakfast.”
The hotel seems to be a collection of historic buildings dispersed across the old parts of town. So it’s really a collection of boutique hotels. The one we stayed in had very comfortable rooms. The buffet breakfast in our particular building was truly outstanding attended to by charming staff - lots of variations on a Swedish theme as well as the usual staples. Parking directly outside our building. Very close indeed to the lake shore, the castle and old town.

We stayed in the annex of Klosterhotell in Vadstena for 3 nights in July 2025 (room booked via Booking.com). The room was comfortable and pleasant, breakfast was very good, and the breakfast staff were friendly and attentive. However, there was no room service—or if there was, it wasn’t functioning at all. On both full days of our stay, we returned in the evening to find the room uncleaned and towels unchanged. After contacting reception, someone eventually came to tidy up in the evening, which is far from acceptable. On the second day, following the advice from reception, we placed the “Please clean the room” sign on the door—but even that did not help. Housekeeping still didn’t show up during the day. This is simply not the level of service expected from a hotel in this category, especially not at the premium price charged. It’s a bad feeling to return after a long day and walk into an untidy room. If daily housekeeping matters to you, we would not recommend booking this hotel.

“Excellent stay in historic setting”
Lovely historic setting. Fantastic location by lake Vättern. Beautiful room. Breakfast was very excellent and so was dinner at the restaurant. The spa that is situated close by was also very good.

Great location for a short stay. The lake and surroundings are beautiful. Room was well appointed - including a small sauna. Good breakfast in a grand hall. It is a peaceful place with lots of greenery and good walks.
