An extraordinary B&B run by a fascinating owner. Wouldn't suit everyone, but suited me perfectly!

An extraordinary B&B. The beautifully kept interior is full of interesting, quirky, important artefacts with a number of themes - music (both content and reproduction methods), the royalty, nautical, soft drinks... there's something for everyone! It would easily work as a museum and you'd need days just to look at everything on display. Breakfast is a well-organised simple "help yourself" continental, ideal if you are a solo traveller (like me) and just need to grab breakfast before you to go work/explore. The location is ideal - just 5/10 minutes walk from the busiest area in St John's for restaurants and pubs, and 5 minutes from the harbour.

Excellent location very close to restaurants and the town centre. Our host Bill was kind and helpful. We loved being able to prepare our own breakfast in the shared kitchen and enjoyed meeting other guests there too. Our upstairs room was quiet and comfy and the shared bathroom was super clean and always available when we needed it.

Disappointing and uncomfortable

The location is great, very central and on one of the famous "jellybean" streets. The host was friendly and welcoming. Very fast WiFi.

For me, it was worth the extra cost to stay at Gower Manor, instead of a downtown hotel.

It was a unique opportunity to be able to stay in such a vibrant and comfortable historical home. I could pretend that I lived there as part of a family unit. I was very pleased with the furnishings and decor. I am not a fan of minimalist accommodation. My room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. Bill (the host) was friendly and informative, but not at all intrusive. It was so nice to able to access the well-stocked kitchen pretty much at any time, and the kitchen was where I met some of the other guests. I was free to come and go whenever I pleased. My only regret was that my stay was so short. If I am able to return to St, John's in the future, Gower Manor will be my first choice of accommodation.

An amazing and interesting place.

The house is a museum! The owner collects old grammophones (even an Edison sonograph with wax record rolls!), records and telephones, decorative items such as figurines, memorative plates from royal visits to Canada, old Cola bottles, old advertisements, old books and so on, mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of these things are in a living room open to the guests, and some are even in the guest bedrooms. Our room had a beautiful fireplace (I don't know if its functional, it was high summer when we visited so we didn't need it), matching old furniture and lots of interesting items on the shelves and hanging from the walls. You can ask the owner to play some of the old records to you (please don't touch them yourselves, some of them are very valuable and fragile). At the same time, everything is well organised with all modern comforts. An amazing and very interesting visit. And the B & B is very close to St. John's beautiful and lively city center.

historic home that’s welcoming and comfy

We’ve stayed in other historic properties, but this is a whole new level. It’s furnished with well curated antiques and curios, an amazing collection. Despite the museum quality collections, the house still felt comfy and welcoming.
