the location of the apartment is very good, right in the center of Semur-en-Auxois.

“Worst stay we have ever had anywhere”

In all the years I have been travelling, including those trips using this site, our stay at this place has to go down as the absolute worst. A few days before we were due to stop off in Semur-en-Auxois we booked this charming looking little studio apartment for a couple of nights to rest during a long journey. 3 days before we were due to arrive I received confirmation from booking com that our payment had been taken and the day before our arrival I received a message from the host giving us check-in instructions and a code for the door entry. We arrived a little later than planned but were not concerned as we had the code. Using the code to enter the apartment we we shocked to find someone else's belongings already there! We called the host and managed with some difficulty to explain the situation (host spoke no English) and she admitted there appeared to have been a double booking. She offered to put us up in a room in her own house (adjacent to the studio) and have use of her kitchen as we had planned to cook food. This seemed somewhat irregular but it was late and as it was a festival weekend in the town we figured it was the best option for us. The host and family seemed welcoming and as we had both studied French at school were able to converse adequately, managed to cook and retire to bed. The next day we took an early breakfast, walked around the town and set off for some local day trips. During the afternoon I received a surprise text message from the host stating that we had no booking and that we owed money for our stay. We were rather shocked as everything had been confirmed prior to our arrival, including by the host herself. I replied with screen shots of our booking on the app along with similar screen shots of the payment confirmation. I received no further communication from the host by message. When we returned to the property for a late lunch we were confronted by the host's husband again accusing us of not paying.
