Paul was an excellent host. He gave us a very friendly greeting on arrival. All through our stay he went out of his way to ensure that we enjoyed the area to the fullest extent. It was so interesting to hear about the history of the buildings and surrounding countryside. He encouraged us to visit the festival in Sansepolcro which was an amazing experience. He even managed to book for us a restaurant that busy evening - the food was great and it gave us a ring-side view of the colourful procession. I am especially grateful that he managed to recover my camera which I lost that evening. He is a wonderful character!

I don’t know what I like most: The quaintness of the place, the gentle touch to history, the overwhelming generosity in fine Italian food, you step into the shoes of st Francis on his pilgrimage with hosts that will not only share their stories with you but also assist you in any and every need you have in rhe area . If you ask about ice cream, Paul will direct you to the Italian national champion of ice cream makers... His answer to most requests is hang on a minute and I show you how to get there. We are making this a permanent stop on our visits to Italy.

We had a wonderful stay at San Martina Vald'Afra. The B&B is a wonderfully restored compound (many buildings , including a small church, over 500 yrs old) in the hills about 10 minutes from Sansepulcro. Vey quiet, beautiful view from room. Room and bath are very large, clean and very well appointed with antique furniture. There is a very nice pool. Owner/host Paul is a wonderful personality, gracious and accommodating, and has an exceptional knowledge of the local history and area. Breakfasts are excellent and made to order. One night Paul fixed us a dinner of Bistecca Alla Florentina : a wonderful meal that ranks as one of the best we have ever had. A hiking trail leads from the B&B to an abbey that was the home of St. Frances of Assissi and is now an active monastery with 3 Monks.
