Here is a clearer and more respectful edit that keeps the context but improves flow and tone: There was a language barrier between us from the start, and we were treated like children. We were repeatedly shouted at for being awake at night. She even said she regretted having us after my partner asked for the remote. That is when the shouting began. It turned into a very long and distressing night.
