Absolutely nothing to like.

We want to start by saying that we have traveled extensively across Asia, Africa and South America. We are used to adapting to accommodation standards that are often very different from European ones, and we normally accept basic conditions without complaint. However, in all our travels around the world, we have never encountered a situation like this. At first glance the place looks reasonably pleasant. The decoration and styling create a good first impression, but unfortunately this hides the real condition of the property. Upon arrival we were required to pay the full amount immediately, before even receiving proper access to the room. In good faith we agreed, assuming the stay would match the impression created. Once inside the room the reality became clear. The room was completely unsuitable for guests, there was extensive mould, the air conditioning was leaking, the shower contained ants and larvae, and the bed was covered with stains and insects. These are not small inconveniences but serious hygiene problems that make a room uninhabitable. Despite advertising an extensive food and drinks menu, nothing was available except coffee. Even outside the high season guests should at least be able to order basic food and drinks, or be informed in advance that services are limited. We calmly tried several times to discuss the situation with the staff and look for a reasonable solution. Instead we were met with aggressive and highly unprofessional behaviour. Because of this we decided to leave immediately and find another hotel so we could continue what had otherwise been a wonderful holiday. We quickly found another accommodation nearby that, at a fraction of the price, was perfectly able to offer basic cleanliness and hospitality. Based on the way the owner responded to us and to other negative reviews, we would not be surprised if this review is again dismissed as lies or blamed on the guests.

Breakfast was provided, there was no choice but we had eggs, mixed fresh fruit with toast every day as well as tea and coffee it was more than adequate a really nicely presented. Great food in the evening and Sri Lankan curry was amazing. Stunning location. On arrival, we were left sitting in the reception area for a long time even though we were the only guests. I think this property may have been very nice a few years ago but it is old and tired now. The room was damp and cool. We were there in mid January so not high season. The place nees a good paint and clean. The communication was poor. We had booked 3 nights but ended up only staying 2 nights. We had paid a non refundable payment but in all the travelling I have done over the last 16 years, I have never come across such poor communication and refusal to discuss a possible refund. The Manager continued to insist that I must talk to Booking.com and that he could do nothing. Booking.com assured me that it was up to Memo's to make the decision and the refund as they had taken the money. The Manager, who was not on site, was very irate with me on the phone and then refused to answer. To be honest, if he was honest and told me that unfortunately, this was not policy to refund or whatever his reason - I would have accepted it but he was completely unprofessional and kept fobbing me off and insisting that it was nothing to do with him and then refused to answer text/emails or phonecalls. Apart from that situation, i would not return to Memo's - it needs a complete overhaul if they expect to do a steady business going forward.

A lovely rustic property right on the beach. We only stayed for one night but the staff were absolutely amazing and couldn't do enough for us. And the breakfast was the best breakfast I have had in the 8 days we have been here

Lovely decorated, the staff and manager, Kris wonderful people. They helped us very much. The food is gourmet. Our stay was fantastic.

“Relaxing laid-back vintage cabana style hotel set on a beautiful beach.”

Fantastic location, right on the beach, next to a dive centre, several beachfront restaurants within a short walking distance in either direction. Small cabana style hotel, with vintage/shabby chic interiors. Peaceful terrace with sun loungers steps from the beach and sea. Good breakfast with plenty of choice included. Cafe/bar/restaurant with varied menu of Sri Lankan and international choices (sandwiches, pasta,pizza). Delicious Sri Lankan curry (must be preordered as it takes a while to prepare). Good communication from owners after booking to arrange payment. Lovely staff, always polite, welcoming and helpful. Relaxing, laid back atmosphere. Nilaveli is lovely, not too busy or overdeveloped but with lots of activities (snorkelling,diving, fishing,whale watching) and beautiful palm fringed beach.

Beautiful place! We loved our 3 nights at Memos beach. Comfortable beds, beautiful location and very relaxed vibe. Aesthetically very nice- lots of photo opportunities :)

Memo’s Beach is instant relaxation. We love love LOVED the chill vibe and friendly people. Unfortunately we ciuld only stay for 2 nights but I wanted to stay for many many more!
