Exceptional hosts (Ogawa and Mari) who go to great lengths to make guests.feel welcome and comfortable. The island is quiet and charming, and the BASE has. good electric bicycles.to explore the area. The dinner is.excellent and very generous.

“Exceptional accommodation on a lovely island”

The accommodation and the host are exceptional. The accommodation is a traditional and lovely renovated Japanese house in the small village of Ocho. It has a spacious shared living room. The sleeping rooms are Japanese style with Tatami and Futon. We stayed two nights, and the host prepared breakfast and dinner for us which was both very good. The second night we had Okonomiyaki for dinner and ate together with the host. [Note: Dinner is not always available and must be reserved in advanced. There is also a spacious kitchen which we, however, didn't use.] The host is very friendly and takes time for a chat. Although the village is remote it is more than worth a visit. It can frequently be reached by bus from Hiro station which we took at the day of arrival, or by ferry which we took at the day of departure. To get around the islands you can rent brand new electric bicycles at the accommodation. The old town of Mitarai can even be reached on foot within 15min. The village and the islands in general are very quiet. If you don't come with your own car, it's recommended to plan a bit in advance. There is a supermarket in the village. And you can find some restaurants in the old town of Mitarai. However, most do only open on weekends and holidays.

“Lovely old house and a great stay”

We have been traveling for 7 weeks in Japan and this was one of the best stays we have experienced. The old house has been very nicely renovated. Our host Mari (who is an architect) was a brilliant host. She is still improving her English (and getting better!), and we had great conversations in the evening (with the help of Google translator) - and I do not speak any Japanese (except for a few words). The food she prepared was very tasty and nicely prepared. And we had a really good tea ceremony with two elderly ladies from the village (great fun!). If we would be coming back to the area - then I would stay here again. Many thanks Mari.
