This is a cute and comfy guest house. I love the premise (renovating, reusing, etc.) and the host is so lovely—she'll help you make (and then cancel) your dinner reservations when your Japanese is lacking and she is very passionate about the project. We love the goal to reuse and not replace. The share spaces are comfy and the futons were awesome.

Everything you'd want from a remote get-away in Kyushu was present: a wonderfully kind host, a central location, an authentic experience living in a Japanese house in the countryside.

“Great vibes and super cosy”
We were warmly greeted after a long drive and given really great information about the house and the town we were in. The place had such a great vibe and is really cosy. There's plenty of communal areas to hang in with a large table area in one room, hammocks in another room, a kitchen and a cute and quiet garden outside at the back of the house. They have put a lot of work into renovating this beautiful old house. Bedding was futons on tatami floors and super comfy. Would suit a group of friends wanting to stay together if you got both rooms out and a great stop over between Fukuoka and Takachiho Gorge. We got some more recommendations for nearby waterfalls also, which ended up better than the Gorge with less people. The town is small but theres some lovely izakayas to eat at which we were given assistance with, to make a reservation. Great vegan donuts at a coffee shop in town also. It's a super cute town to stop by if you want a slower pace. Would definitely come back if i was travelling through there again. Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

Great place to stay at! A cute old house with ancient charm, and welcoming hosts, who went above and beyond. They suggested and booked a reservation for us at a delicious nearby restaurant, and when I embarassingly forgot a bag, they shipped it to the hotel I was staying at on the other side of Kyushu! Thanks again 🙏

Our stay here was truly unforgettable! The hosts were incredibly warm and welcoming. They even surprised each of us with personalized laser-engraved name keychains, which was such a thoughtful touch! They also helped us book a reservation at a very authentic Japanese restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious dinner.

A very cozy tradional japanese house which features a kotatsu (a low table with heating integrated) a fully equipped kitchen and several tatami bedrooms which are very comfy. But the highlight is the enthusiastic lady who is the owner. She talks with proud about the house and explains everything in detail. Wonderful! The house is very close to some great sights as well

“Warm,peaceful and authentic.”
We stayed for 2 nights and we felt like home. This place is sweet and warm. The most beautiful thing is the community sense of this place, the owner’s beautiful smile and her willingness to share her love for her village.

“Wonderful place and a wonderful host”
Rie is such a wonderful and kind host. Although we stayed just one night, she made it so memorable. The moment we arrived she helped us with an excellent dinner recommendation and reservation and walked us over - explaining the history of the area to us. She even made sure that the accommodation was heated up before we arrived. I can't recommend this place and Rie enough.

“Couldn’t have been better”
It was a very nice experience to sleep in a well made traditional japanese guesthouse. We had the accommodation for the three of us and it is very big, just in a small other room there was a volunteering couple and they used the kitchen but no problem. Everything was very well thought of and the owner explained everything very welcoming. Also it is there to preserve traditional housing and villages so it was a very special experience.

“Amazing host!”
Kind, responsive, helpful, happy host..Rie, the host did her own renovation with cool wood technique. Close to free parking. Nice and warm inside. She turned on the heater in our room before we got in. Comfy futon on tatami. Full kitchen, toilet and shower are all shared. Was provided excellent tips for restaurants and what to explore. She truly cares. Even provided us with earplugs.

“Friendly guesthouse in a quiet old village”
Old house transformed into a guesthouse in the middle of the village with a long history. Very kind and helpful hostess. Spacious house with access to a dining room and a laid back entrance. Beautiful tatami matts in the spacious bedroom. The village was a pleasant surprise with a small grower of top Japanese organic teas (hard to find in Japan) a very good butcher, a tofu shop, a small fish shop etc. Many local products at the nearby roadstation. In an hour you reach the Aso area. Very beautiful and interesting mountain forests around the village and several top tea growers. Recommend you have some time to stay in the village, not just for the night.

“A beautiful Japanese guesthouse for you to relax in”
The guesthouse is located in the heart of a little town called Mamihara. The property has a kitchen equipped with utensils, rice cooker, microwave etc. the common areas are spacious and welcoming. Places to write, cook, eat and chat to other guests. The building has been cleaned and renovated but still shows the beautiful originality of the past. The futon bedding is comfortable and the rooms are beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would recommend this guesthouse to those hoping to visit Mamihara or surrounding areas. In the town is a lovely donut cafe, two restaurants and shops for both food, vegetables and gifts. The river near by is a great place to spend your morning. Rie San is a lovely host who takes care of you and makes sure you have everything you might need. She is very kind and made my trip very special. The location is perfect for a drive to Takachiho Gorge or Mount Aso.

We had nice rooms for some privacy, and even if there were other guests we didn’t feel we lacked privacy. The kotatsu was great after a rainy day !
